COURSE DESCRIPTION:
3D Design is an introduction to three dimensional (3D) form and space. In this course students
will work with a variety of building materials with an emphasis on clay. Ceramics focuses on
hand building and using surface decoration with some exposure to the potter’s wheel. Students
will create sculptural objects and functional pieces. Students will also be exposed to a variety
of three dimensional building techniques and work with materials such as metal, wood, plaster,
and found objects. Tools such as propane torches, saws, drills, and cutting knives will be used
throughout the semester. Students engage in the disciplines of Art History, Art Criticism,
Aesthetics, and Art Production. The elements of this course will be taught through
demonstrations, critiques, research projects, experimentation, and assignments.
Grading Policies: Grades will be based upon the grading scale published within the student
planner. Grades will be determined upon completed work, quizzes/tests, and participation in
final and in progress critiques. Late work will be reduced one letter grade.

General Classroom Guidelines
1.
Items to Bring to Class: A writing utensil, and completed homework. ***I will not give
out pencils. A pencil will be needed everyday.
2.
Be courteous to all students, classroom equipment, tools, supplies, and the teacher.
3.
TARDIES: You will be counted tardy if you are not in the room and seated by the end
of the second bell. Tardiness will be handled according to the published guidelines in
the student handbook.
4.
School Policies: All building policies described in the student planner will be enforced in
this class. Please familiarize yourself with those policies, as I will hold all students
accountable to them.
5.
This is a learning environment and disruptions will not be tolerated. For example,
misuse of technology (Ipads), CELLULAR PHONES, swearing and inappropriate
comments, and horseplay are not permitted. In order for everyone to maximize their
learning potential, it is the individual’s responsibility to help make this classroom a
comfortable and safe educational experience.
IPADS SHOULD NOT BE OUT IN 3D. Clay can, and will slowly ruin your ipad. Clay
dust can be sucked into the ipad and can cause internal damage. You are liable if your
ipad breaks.
6.
Food and Drink are not permitted within the classroom. However, clear water bottles are
allowed.
7.
Time: Make every second count!!! It is important to utilize the given work time within
each class and any opportunities to work outside the normally scheduled class.
8.
Cleaning up is an important part of every studio class. Allow yourself the appropriate
time needed to properly clean and put away equipment and supplies. Respect your
room and your peers by providing them a safe and clean environment to work in.
Please help leave the room and your working area cleaner than how you found it.
It is very important to never use any tools or materials without the proper
instruction, safety equipment, or consent given by the instructor. 3D Design
requires the use of a variety of building materials and techniques. Students will
be exposed to clay, wood, metals, plaster and other supplies. If you have
allergies to specific materials please let the instructor know to ensure your
safety.
