February 6, 2014 To: Thomas County Middle School Teachers State Contest Qualifiers from Thomas County Middle School From: Laura McCarty, State Coordinator Congratulations on your achievement at the Thomas County Middle School competition of National History Day in Georgia 2014! You are now invited to participate in the state contest, which is April 26, 2014 on the campus of Mercer University in Macon. CONTEST REGISTRATION Registration for the state contest is via an online process. Here’s how: Teachers or home school mentors should go to http://ga.nhd.org/register , and choose the link for the Georgia State 2014 Contest. Teachers select “educator with competing students” from the drop down menu. Teachers enter the following information: The name of the school The state in which the school is located Each participating student's name The last four digits of the student's home phone number The Category and Division in which the entry will be made A basic, working title for the entry (which can be changed, later) Once the students are set up by the teachers, they and their parents will be able to log-in and complete registration, which involves verifying permission for them to participate and confirmation of the accuracy of the information. This is where a student can change the name of his/her entry, if they want to do so. Once you’ve logged in, you will be presented with your personal Registration Status Page. This page displays a list of items that are required for Contest registration, as well as items that are optional. Items marked with a red asterisk (*) are required. For Thomas County Middle teachers, the system should look familiar to you from last year. Items that are required marked with a red asterisk. Once you have completed those, you will get green check marks. There are registration instructions and videos available at http://ga.nhd.org/ud/templates/register.php REGISTRATION FEE The registration fee for the state contest is $7 per student, payable by cash or check by the state contest date. The registration program will give you a form to mail to the Georgia Humanities Council with your check. If your school is paying for your entry, there will be an opportunity to indicate such. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (MAP, DIRECTIONS, ETC) WILL BE POSTED AT http://www.georgiahumanities.org/curriculum-and-schools/national-history-day CATEGORY SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS Historical papers are judged in advance of the state contest. Please submit four copies of the paper to the GHC office by April 15, 2013 for this judging. Students in the paper category are not interviewed at the state contest. Websites are reviewed in advance of the state contest. The websites will be locked for judging on April 15. Website students will be interviewed on April 26. During the registration process, you will be asked to provide the URL for your website (example: http://12345678.nhd.weebly.com) . SPECIAL AWARDS—THE ANGELO GROUP AWARDS FOR MILITARY HISTORY RESEARCH Thanks to the generosity of The Angelo Group, we will offer special awards for outstanding entries in the area of military history in the junior and senior divisions. If your entry is on a military history topic, and you would like to be considered, please submit one copy of your process paper/bibliography by April 15, indicating that you would like to be considered.
