DRESS CODE GUIDELINES

Revised June 2013

Employees of the Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union are looked upon as responsible and trustworthy citizens by our members and the surrounding community. To uphold this trust and responsibility, we feel that the Credit Union employees should uphold the image the Credit Union strives to protect--that of a large, progressive, yet fairly conservative financial institution.

With this in mind, we feel that our manner of dress should convey to the member, or potential member, a feeling of professionalism. Moderation and good taste in dress go a long way toward making a favorable impression on members, as well as on fellow employees and management. We should all recognize the impact our appearance has on others. While dress is not necessarily a consideration for promotion, it reflects your image in relation to your effectiveness in representing the Credit Union. Articles of clothing should always be coordinated, neatly pressed, well-fitted and with an emphasis on good taste and moderation. Because

‘professional’ can mean different things to different people, we feel the need to provide some guidance on what is considered appropriate for our environment. The following guidelines have been written to help employees determine what is acceptable:

Be concerned with your TOTAL APPEARANCE. Articles of clothing should be coordinated so that the

overall look is one of good taste and one that is BUSINESSLIKE in appearance.

Tattoos: Tattoos must be covered at all times.

Jewelry: Visible pierced jewelry should be worn in the ears only. Jewelry should be professional, yet conservative. Length and width of earrings should not be larger than a half dollar coin.

Hair: Hair must be neat and clean. Hair color must be a natural color (a color that you could be born with – brown, black, blonde, auburn). Unnatural colors (for example: blue, purple, green, yellow, burgundy, orange, etc.) are not acceptable. Extreme variations of hair colors and extreme hairstyles are not acceptable.

Slacks/pants: Slacks are to be neat, clean and of proper fit - not tight fitting or too baggy; pants should not be dragging the floor or be too short (above ankle). Dress khakis or twill-type slacks are acceptable. Branch employees: pants should be solid colors of khaki, black, navy, grey or brown.

Jeans, “skinny” pants, crop pants, cargo or painter’s type pants are unacceptable.

Skirt/Dress: Length of skirt or dress will be no shorter than 3 inches above the bend of the knee. This includes open splits in the skirt or dress. Sun dresses (unless worn with a jacket) and dresses with a low neckline are not acceptable. Maxi dresses/skirts that come to the ankle or floor are not acceptable. Long dresses/skirts are acceptable provided they are above the ankle. “High/Low” dresses/skirts (shorter in the front and longer in the back) are not acceptable. Hosiery is optional.

Branch employees: skirts/dresses should be solid colors of khaki, black, navy, grey or brown.

Shirt/blouse: Blouses should not have low necklines. Sleeveless styles are allowed as long as they are not cut in at the shoulders (i.e. no tank or string strap tops unless covered with a jacket at all times). T-

Shirts, sweatshirts and bare midriff blouses are unacceptable.

Leggings: Leggings are not acceptable to be worn as pants. Leggings may be worn (like hosiery) under a skirt/dress and should be worn with boots so that it is not evident they end at the ankle. Textured leggings are not acceptable.

Other inappropriate clothing: Certain items of clothing are considered inappropriate. These include, but are not limited to jumpsuits, transparent fabrics, denim, corduroy or other casual fabrics, shorts, overalls, cropped/capri pants. Any style or fabric that creates a casual appearance is not appropriate for office wear. Unbusinesslike, extreme or fad styles (i.e. low waist pants) should be avoided.

Shoes: Dress shoes are expected unless there is a medical need requested by a doctor’s statement.

Sneakers, slippers and flip-flops or sandals resembling flip flops are not considered appropriate. Flat, casual cork soles and “spongy” soles are not acceptable. Dress cork-soled shoes, with a heel, are acceptable. Dress sandals are acceptable during warmer weather. Dress sandals should have either a strap across the back, have a heel or have additional straps across the top that make it look dressier.

Please note there is a difference between dress sandals and casual sandals. Other inappropriate shoes are casual shoes styled by or after Crocs, Tevas, Yellow Box, Choco’s and/or the cork-soled

Birkenstocks.

Boots: Boots may be worn if dressy. Casual boots, such as: cowboy boots, army or hiking boots, Uggs, etc. are not appropriate. Pants should not be tucked into boots.

Male employees: Back office male employees, if not in logowear, should wear dress shirts with a tie and can be worn alone or with suits, sport coats, cardigans or pullover sweaters.

Business Casual Fridays (back office only): The guidelines outlined above are applicable on Fridays, with the following exceptions: Denim and corduroy pants are acceptable for back office staff on

Fridays only. “Dress jeans” (not faded or torn) may be worn if properly fitted (not too tight, baggy, long or short); “skinny” jeans are not acceptable. Shirts should be dressier/business professional, no t-shirts or sweatshirts. The overall look should be professional.

Logowear

Logowear is mandatory attire each business day for employees in the branches. Staff members (other than branch employees) have the option to wear logowear as an alternative to regular business attire (as outlined above). Logowear may be worn with skirts, dress khakis or twill-type slacks. Pants or skirts should be solid colors of khaki, black, navy, grey or brown.

Logowear is provided through Land’s End and may be ordered online through the e-store. The Credit

Union provides an annual allotment to all employees by voucher to purchase logowear. Employees may order more than their voucher amounts at their cost through the e-store.

Special assignments may be considered for exception to the above rules by the Department Manager. Proper attire for the assigned job is expected. Travel on Credit Union business may also be considered for exception; however, employees are expected to conform to a professional appearance when representing the organization at meetings or training sessions.

MANAGER'S RESPONSIBILITY -- When a manager believes that an employee is improperly dressed or groomed, the manager may send the employee home (without pay) to change their attire. The employee will be charged with paid time off. Repeated violations will be cause for disciplinary action.

These guidelines do not attempt to cover every possibility of what is proper or improper dress for office wear.

We believe Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union employees know what is expected of them in order to support the image of the Credit Union and, as responsible employees, they will strive to maintain that image.
