Organization
University College Roosevelt (UCR) is one of the International Honors Colleges of Utrecht
University (ranked #1 in the Netherlands by the Academic Ranking of World Universities). The
faculty and students form a vibrant academic community centered on a Liberal Arts and
Sciences bachelor’s education. Students hail from all over the globe and follow a broad and
intensive study program in the historic town of Middelburg, where they live in the inner city
campus. Classes are never larger than 25 students and include permanent assessment as well as
a high level of interaction with instructors. Courses consist of 30 2-hour sessions twice a
week. The official language used at UCR is English. Instructors have great freedom in designing
their courses, and work within an environment that firmly has teaching as its priority, whilst
also supporting undergraduate and faculty research.
The Dutch Flemish Accreditation Organization (NVAO) has given UCR’s Liberal Arts and
Sciences program the prestigious 'Label of Excellence'. To date, this label has only been
awarded to a very select group of Dutch programs, indicating that the education at UCR is of
the highest standards. In 2014, that same organization renewed UCR’s special qualification of
‘Small-Scale and Intensive’. This is a measure of quality that is only given to those institutions
with the highest classroom interaction, the smallest communities and the most intensive
academic program. Extensive survey of students continually ranks UCR among the top 3
university colleges in the Netherlands. After graduation, UCR’s students continue in the best
master programs all over the world.
Job description
The law track at UCR has the following aims: to introduce students to the general theory of
law, its concepts, texts and cases in particular legal fields; to familiarize students with the most
important legal institutions and key skills of legal research, drafting and argumentation; to firmly
place the knowledge of law within a wider social science curriculum, leading to an
understanding of “law in action” and its interrelationship with other disciplines; and to prepare
students for admission to prestigious legal masters programs, whether in the Netherlands or
abroad. The law track includes courses in legal fields, such as introduction to private law,
criminal law, constitutional and administrative law and international and European law.
The candidate to be an instructor in the law track should be a jurist, with a broad legal
background and range of interests, as well as experience in teaching law. Whereas disciplinary
training can have taken place in either the common or the civil law traditions, it is important
that s/he takes a comparative perspective, not only training students in the legal field but also
fostering them to be open towards other approaches and disciplines.
The teaching load will depend on the availability of courses and the background of the
instructor. There is a possibility to renew the contract and to work towards tenure based on
good performance and demand.
Requirements
The candidate should have:
 Completed doctoral (PhD) certificate;
 The background to teach a number of different law courses;
 Preferably: experience in legal practice;
 Evidence of teaching experience and excellence (e.g. via evaluations);
 Course development experience (desirable);
 Excellent English language skills (written & spoken). All non-native speakers of English have to
provide evidence of English proficiency: a minimum of CEF-level C1 (e.g. CAE grade A or B, IELTS > 7.5;
TOEFL IBT > 102);
 Preparedness to live in Middelburg;
Conditions of employment
The salary (based on the VSNU salary scales) and the appointment level commensurate with
experience and will be in the range from € 3.324 to € 5.608 per month (for full time
employment). UCR initially offers a contract for six months, running from July 1 to December 31, 2015.
Travel costs within the Netherlands will be partly reimbursed. Furthermore, UCR offers
