Food Web Project
The purpose of this project is to demonstrate how energy moves through a food web. You will be creating
a food web using poster board/ white paper and pictures or drawings of all the organisms that make up
a food web. You may use pencil, paper, crayons, markers, hand drawn pictures, images from the internet
or magazines, or Microsoft office applications. Please read and follow all of the directions carefully in
order to get all of the points that you deserve.
Procedure:


Step 1: Choose your biome/ecosystem/organism
Step 2: Research organisms- Suggested sources but are not limited to:
A. Science Textbook Unit 2
B. Google Search - hint type your organism name and also prey, predator, food, diet or eats.
C. http://wwf.panda.org/about_our_earth/teacher_resources/webfieldtrips/food_chains/
D. http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/organism_menu.htm
E. http://www.whateats.com/ “What Eats What”


Step 3: Construct your food web (see criteria below)
Step 4: Submit Food Web by ___________________
Criteria:
A. 10 total specimens and One Energy Source. All of your specimens must be found in the same
ecosystem. Choose an ecosystem that you find interesting. Your 10 specimens and energy
source are to be divided up in the following manner:
1. Energy Source:
The sun must be located somewhere on your poster. This does not count as one of your
specimens. This will be included in your presentation graded.
2. Producers:
A minimum of 1 must be included.
3. Primary (1st level) Consumers:
A minimum of 3 must be included.
4. Secondary (2nd level) Consumers:
A minimum of 3 must be included.
5. Tertiary (3rd level) Consumers:
A minimum of 2 must be included.
6. Decomposers:
You must include 1.

B. Identification
Identification of your specimens must be accurate. Each specimen must be correctly identified with its
common name and type of nutrition. In addition, the biome and ecosystem of your project must be labeled
on the front of the poster board. Use correct vocabulary. Print very neatly or type on a word processor.
Print, cut, and glue. Remember, neatness counts!

C. Symbiotic Relationships
Choose three different organisms within your ecosystem and identify a symbiotic relationship within its
environment. Identify the type of symbiotic relationship and the role the organism has in it.
——————————————————————————————- 3 points
D. Trophic Levels
Organisms must be arranged according to proper tropic levels

E. Links – energy transfer
You will connect all your specimens with lines showing the transfer of energy. Arrows must point the
correct direction, and be biologically accurate in terms of predator-prey relationships. Use a ruler and a
marker to achieve neat, highly visible, straight lines. Use different colors for different food chains in your
food web.
——————————————————————————————– 5 points
F. Presentation – what your final project looks like
Your food web must be done on standard size poster board/ or 8 ½ x 11 paper paneled. You may choose
any color you want. You may want to choose a color that goes with your ecosystem. Ex.: Blue for an
ocean ecosystem, green for a forest type ecosystem, etc. Of course, white is always a good color choice.
The presentation part of your grade will be based on neatness, effort, arrangement of specimens, and
creativity.
