Description
Collaborate with your peers to develop a group entry for a live public architectural
competition (competition subject to be announced).

Creative Ecologies - Lecture / premiere: Towards an Ecology of Mind

This lecture event will involve a premiere of the documentary An Ecology of Mind, a film
portrait of Gregory Bateson produced and directed by his daughter, Nora Bateson. This
documentary introduces the key ideas of his influential theories, in particular evaluating
the world as a series of systems containing those of individuals, societies and ecosystems.
The lecture will include a panel discussion of Bateson’s work.
(This lecture forms the start of a two-day multidisciplinary workshop for postgraduate
students with an interest in creative ecologies.)
Any University student can attend this event.

Mind, Peg Rawes, /Bartlett School of Architecture and [external to be confirmed] will lead
a 2-day practical, multidisciplinary workshop to explore programmatic applications of
Gregory Bateson’s theories.
This studio-based workshop is limited to postgraduate students with an interest in creative
ecologies.

Digital Skin
Description
Following a series of template video processes students will work in teams of six to
develop a response to the architectural context of Inspace through the theme of digital
skin.

The gallery has many data projectors that may project inside or outside – introverting the
space or extroverting it. Students are be encouraged to make a short video piece that
responds to the idea of a skin for the building and should carefully consider whether the
audience should inside or outside to view this skin. Since the data projectors throw on to a
translucent screens over the glass windows it would be possible to move inside and
outside the gallery to experience the skin as a membrane. Other works might want to
consider the connection between the projectors – as though large landscape screens that
are synced in time.

Earth glorious earth

A studio-based workshop exploring the creative and technical application of earth plasters.
We will have an introductory talk on the use of earth plasters, and then students will be
able to work over the two days to create earth plaster plaques, using a range of materials
and techniques. Access to microscopy facilities will enable an understanding and
expression of the material and the relationship of scales. .
ECA students with an interest in natural materials.
