1. THE WESTERN ISLES
The Western Isles lie approximately 30 miles off the West Coast of Scotland and consist of
many small islands in the Outer Hebrides. The main ones being Lewis, Harris, the Uists and
Barra, with a total population of 26,500. They are easily accessible by ferry from Ullapool,
Skye and Oban and by air from Aberdeen, Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow. There is a
bus service to Inverness from Ullapool which runs in conjunction with the ferry timetables
and links with rail services from Inverness.
Stornoway is the administrative “capital” of the Western Isles. It has a population of
approximately 8,000 and has all the facilities one would expect to find in a town of this size.
There are many primary schools on the islands as well as secondary schools. They are all
well equipped and have a good reputation for academic achievement. Adult education is
provided through the Lews Castle Technical College which is part of the University of the
Highlands & Islands. Degree courses are available at the College.
2. WESTERN ISLES HOSPITAL
The Western Isles Hospital is a general rural hospital serving the Outer Hebrides area. The
hospital was opened in 1992, is modern and well equipped. The main hub hospital is in
Stornoway with 96 beds covering specialties in General Medicine, General Surgery,
Orthopaedics and Trauma, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry, Paediatrics and
Radiology.
The Hospital has an up-to-date laboratory service covering the main disciplines of
haematology, microbiology and clinical chemistry with ready access to more specialised
investigations at Raigmore laboratories and other specialised laboratories in Scotland.
The Radiology Department is well equipped for routine radiology, CT scanning, ultrasound
and Doppler studies.
The obstetric ultrasound scans are performed by trained sonographers with direct links with
the Fetal Medicine Ultrasound Department in the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow.

The main referral centres are in Inverness and Glasgow, but hospitals in Edinburgh and
other hospitals in Scotland are used when necessary in accordance with established referral
management system.
3. DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY
BEDS
The current bed status for this Unit is:
a) Labour Suite - 2 delivery rooms well equipped for instrumental deliveries and
neonatal resuscitation.
b) 8 Combined antenatal and postnatal beds
c) Early pregnancy assessment unit.
d) In-patient gynaecological beds in a mixed specialties surgical ward
e) Day Surgery Unit with 8 beds in a mixed specialty ward.
f)
Pre-operative assessment unit located in mixed specialty ward.
MEDICAL STAFFING
All posts have the appropriate recognition from the Royal College:
Consultants: Dr R K Al-Kamil (Lead Clinician)
Dr P O’Duro (Locum)
Doctors in training: One Foundation Year 2
One GPST in Mixed Specialties in rotation.

4. THE POST
The post-holder will be involved in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation
or evidence based care and treatment for the inpatients and outpatients at the Western Isles
Hospital and Uist and Barra Hospital and other sites as required by the Board. The
appointee will be expected to cross-over from time to time for absent colleagues and be
expected to participate in the day-to-day supervision and training of the junior medical staff,
undergraduates and attend for clinical training.
The post-holder will be expected to devote time to non-clinical service development for the
Board, such as Audit Design, Clinical Education, Risk Assessment etc the particular area to
be agreed on the basis of previous experience, aptitude and job planning requirements.
The post-holder is expected to implement agreed national and local standards and
guidelines in obstetrics and gynaecology practice. It is expected that the post-holder will
deliver person centred high quality care, with particular emphasis on developing a special
interest to complement the existing interests.
The post-holder will participate in the RCOG continuing medical education activities to obtain
the required CME credits as part of their continuing professional development.
The post-holder will have formal yearly enhanced appraisal interviews to set objectives for
the post and monitor achievement. The appraisal process is usually conducted locally by
NES approved appraisers as part of GMC Revalidation process.
The Consultant Committee meeting is convened on a monthly basis. There is a weekly MDT
cancer network meeting with the Western Infirmary in Glasgow via videolink.
The post-holder has good secretarial support and has an allocated office space.
The post-holder is required to adhere to all agreed NHS Western Isles policies, procedures,
protocols and guidelines.
The post-holder is required to effectively participate in and promote all appropriate SPSP
bundles and safety measures.
The Job plan will be agreed and reviewed annually to respond to the needs of the patients
and the organisation.
The post-holder is expected to respond in a timely manner and address all complaints,
concerns, adverse events and claims in accordance with policies/procedures.

Early Pregnancy Clinic from 9— 10 a.m. daily from Monday — Friday. On-call duties will be
shared on the basis of 1:2 rota. Short period cover for a colleagues when on leave.
5. MAIN CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
a) The Terms and Conditions of Service are from the Consultant Grade Terms and
Conditions of Service (New Consultant’s Contract) issued September 2003 by the
Scottish Executive Health Department.
b) Possession of MRCQG or an equivalent certificate is essential and you must also be
fully registered with the General Medical Council on the Specialist Register with a
Licence to Practise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology or indicate your anticipated CCI
date.
c) It is a requirement of the post that the post-holder will reside within a 10 mile road
radius of the Western Isles Hospital.
d) All entrants to the NHS Western Isles Board must be certified medically fit and the
appointment is conditional on such certification. Arrangements for medical screening
are the responsibility of the Occupational Health Service.
e) Termination of the appointment is subject to three months notice on either side.
f)

g)
EXPOSURE PRONE PROCEDURES
The post-holder will be required to undertake on a regular basis or occasional basis,
exposure prone invasive procedures (EPPs). As this could potentially place patients
at risk, candidates must show evidence of immune status to HEPATITIS B or agree
to undergo the necessary procedures.
It should be noted that the offer of appointment is subject to confirmation that the
successful candidate is HEPATITIS B immune. This is checked by the Occupational
Health Service.
