ROLE SPECIFIC INFORMATION AND CHALLENGES
The Knowledge Exchange Manager plays a central role in supporting the University’s
knowledge exchange strategy and policies. The role is designed to support the University in its
efforts to increase external research and innovation income and to facilitate the delivery of
services to external business organisations as well as to the wider community. The post-holder
will have excellent project management skills and be able to initiate, develop and manage bids
with external funders such as EU Structural and Investment Funds and HEFCE.
The post-holder is responsible for the day-to-day management of all of the University
knowledge exchange activities, engaging widely with internal stakeholders ranging from the
most senior staff in the institution to newly appointed junior lecturers. The post-holder may also
engages with senior staff in organisations outside of the University.
The Knowledge Exchange Manager’s role is central to meeting the challenge of commercial
and business engagement within a highly creative specialist institution.
The post holder will be highly organised and an excellent communicator but also have the
flexibility to work within a constantly evolving knowledge exchange environment and be able to
balance the demands of external partnership working with the requirements of higher
education. They will have a highly positive approach to customer service, looking to exceed
expectations wherever possible and will proactively forge productive working relationships with
colleagues and/or clients.
The post holder will be required to work occasional evenings to attend external meetings and
be willing to travel within the UK and possibly Europe.

PURPOSE




To support and write major bids by UMT in the pursuance of large scale funding.
To initiate, develop and manage appropriate funding for the development of enterprise
activity including European funding.
To lead and manage project support for enterprise activities.
To lead and develop an enterprise culture within Arts University Bournemouth by
supporting collaborative research, contract research, consultancy, innovation,
knowledge exchange and exploitation of Intellectual Property (IP).

Specialist:
KEY DELIVERABLES
 To promote the University’s research expertise and related services in order to
engage with external parties on collaborative and bidding opportunities that are
supportive of the University’s strategic interests including European funding.
 To provide guidance and project management support for successful bids and
contracts.
 To initiate and manage, where appropriate, the consultancy activities of the AUB
arranging suitable terms, setting up contracts and liaising with finance for invoicing.
 To draft and edit papers for key committees that support knowledge exchange
activity e.g. Research and Knowledge Transfer Committee.
 To attend internal committees e.g. Research and Knowledge Transfer Committee,
to chair working groups and represent the University on external local, regional and
national bodies as appropriate.
 To bring academic and professional staff into proactive and fruitful relationships
between the University and business and in doing so support collaborative
research, contract research, consultancy, innovation, knowledge exchange and
exploitation of IP where appropriate.

To generate relevant management information; ensure accurate input of data; and
establish and maintain systems and databases for the tracking, recording and
monitoring of staff knowledge exchange activities.
To efficiently plan and organise the submission of institutional and external project
returns e.g. HEFCE, including drawing up and ensuring delivery to agreed timelines to meet externally imposed deadlines.
To develop and establish appropriate systems and procedures to capture and
monitor data and communicate information based on this work to inform the
University’s strategic decision-making.
To work effectively with external collaborative partners in the procurement,
management and reporting of successful funding bids.
To work with a range of internal business and academic functions, including
Finance and Human Resources to collate and consolidate multi-faceted data in a
matter which is timely and informative, and meets the needs of internal and
external stakeholders.
To develop effective relationships with internal and external agencies and
successfully manage collaborative arrangements between the AUB and other
institutions in order to deliver agreed outcomes.
To work closely and effectively with all members of UMT particularly the DVC.
To work with colleagues in marketing to publicise activities both internally and
externally.
 To ensure knowledge exchange activity and planned expenditure across the
University is captured and used to inform decision-making.
 To highlight, and draw to the attention of senior managers, issues of concern in
respect to the quality or sufficiency of resources in respect of knowledge exchange
activities.

BUDGET RESPONSIBILITY
There will be budget responsibility for existing and new successful internal and external KE
projects as appropriate.
