Students will learn about what goes on at a United States Senator’s office. Congressman
Fortenberry will meet with the students and speak about a possible Chief Standing Bear
Historical trail between Nebraska and Oklahoma.

Nebraska Legislature
Students will go up to balcony overlooking the legislative chamber and view legislature in session. If
time permits Sen. Price will recognize the students attending that day.
10:50-11:15 a.m.
Senator Mike Johanns
287 Federal Building 100 Centennial Mall North
Meet with members of Senator Johanns’ staff to learn more about the work of a
United States Senator. Senator Johanns is a member of the United States Senate
Committee on Indian Affairs.
Please note: All visitors must provide a photo I.D. for entrance to the Federal
Building. Please leave cell phones and video cameras in your vehicles. You will have to pass through a
metal detector for entrance to the building. Arrangements have been made for one NCIA staff person
to shoot any necessary video while we are in the Federal Building.

Senior Judge Warren K. Urbom

Courtroom #4
Students will get to tour a Federal Courtroom, and hear a presentation from
Judge Urbom about the Wounded Knee trials. Judge Urbom was the presiding judge for these trials.

Military Service: U.S. Air Force, non-commissioned officer (retired).

Commerce; American Legion; Fraternal Order of Eagles; lifetime member, National Rifle Association.

Appointed to Nebraska Legislature: 2010
Born Jan. 9, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa.
Education: Graduate of South Sioux City High School, 1964.
Family: Married Dee Meyer, May 25, 1996; four children: Christina Mundil, Charles Bloomfield, Beth
Brader and Mark Bloomfield.
Occupation: Retired.
Former: Truck driver and farmer.
Military service: U.S. Army (1966-68); Vietnam veteran.
Member: American Legion; Bethany Presbyterian Church.
Former member: Wayne County Republican Party (chairman); Jackson School Board.

Born April 16, 1986, in Ft. Carson, Colo.
Education: Graduate of Weeping Water High School, 2004; Georgetown University, (B.A. in government
and theology) 2008.
Occupation: Rancher; head of business operations, Art Research Technologies.
Member: Young Art Patrons Committee, Joslyn Art Museum; Georgetown University Alumni Admissions

Noted Native American activist Frank LaMere will speak with the students about testifying and lobbying
on Native American issues.

Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy
The Lt. Governor will speak about the role of the Lt. Governor in state governmental affairs.
2:20 – 2:40
Time to Tour the State Capitol
Special attention will be given to view Native American images and symbols included in the art and
architecture of the building.
2:45-3:00
Snacks at the State Capitol Cafetira
Cookies, fresh fruit and choice of one beverage will be provided to each student and liaison. This time
can also be used for NCIA staff and tribal liaisons to discuss dates of next field trip, project status, site
visits etc.
