Pledge of Excellence

I am Respectful,

I am Responsible,

I am safe.

I am here to learn, therefore, I will…

Respect myself, others, and my school;

Always take responsibility for my own actions;

By acting this way,

I will be a successful Lebanon Junction Bulldog!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome to a new year at Lebanon Junction Elementary School. We are excited that you are a part of our LJES Bulldog family.

Our school is very fortunate to have an outstanding faculty and staff that go above and beyond to meet the needs of every student. I know that this will be a year of growth, discovery, and learning for your child. We appreciate the trust that you will place in us each day and promise to make this a year that your child will not forget.

We have high expectations for our students and ask that you work with us to encourage your child on the areas of attendance, attitude, and effort. When our students give their best every day, success follows. This handbook is filled with a wealth of information concerning our school. It can be used as a quick reference guide throughout the school year. If at any point you have questions or concerns, feel free to call your child’s teacher or me.

We look forward to a terrific 2015 – 2016!

Sincerely,

Patrick Durham

Principal

AGENDAS

Each student is given an agenda on their first day of school. This agenda is intended to provide two-way communication between school and home. Please use the agenda for:

Most parent/teacher notes

Student homework/classwork

Important events

Paperclip/staple important notes (car/bus rider, absence notes, etc.)

 Please sign the agenda EVERY day. This signifies parents have seen the agenda.

ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE

Arrival begins at 8:40. Students may go directly to breakfast if they wish to eat or to their classroom. Official school hours are

9:10 – 3:50 for students K-5. Morning preschool hours are 9:10 – 12:10 and afternoon preschool hours are 12:40 – 3:50.

Preschool students do not attend school on Fridays for 2015-2016.

Students should not enter the building before 8:40.

All students are encouraged to ride a school bus. This helps LJES with traffic in and around the school.

2

BUS RIDER INFORMATION:

**ALL PRESCHOOL STUDENTS require HAND-TO-HAND release procedures to an approved adult (named on the student info sheet). ID is required at time of release to ensure proper safety procedures are followed. A substitute Bus monitor will not recognize you by sight, so picture ID is ALWAYS REQUIRED.**

All students will be a bus rider at some point during the school year, even if only on a field trip. All students will be given information explaining the rules that apply to bus transportation, entitled “Regulations for Pupils Riding School Buses.” These rules/regulations will be reviewed with all students at school. Each parent is also asked to review these regulations. The transportation form will need to be signed and returned with the beginning of the year paperwork.

Notification: Bullitt County Schools’ Department of Transportation has installed a video monitoring system on each of our school buses. This system has video and audio capabilities. This system will provide improved safety, security, and is another means of monitoring conduct.

CAR RIDER INFORMATION:

AM Drop-offs:

 Drop-offs are in the side parking lot (Café side).

Drop-offs should pull as far forward as possible to maximize efficiency.

Drop-offs are 1 lane only. You will enter the parking lot in 2 lanes but will condense to 1 lane for safety.

Please follow traffic cones and school direction to ensure safety and efficiency.

PM Car Riders:

LJ uses a 2 lane PM Car Rider system.

All LJ car rider tags must be prominently displayed in the vehicle’s windshield.

Please stay in your vehicle while waiting for dismissal. Waiting outside your vehicle creates a number of safety concerns for school staff. We will remind adults to help us with this concern.

WALKERS:

We do not promote students walking due to safety concerns. Parents may sign up for a WALKER tag. Please understand this is only approved after reviewing household location and need. Our buses provide transportation for ALL students.

Upper Parking lot drop-offs and pickups are not permitted. Utilize our car rider system to ensure student safety.

Any car riders wishing to eat breakfast should arrive at school by 8:50 am to allow time to eat.

All other car riders should arrive by 9:00 am. It is extremely important that all students arrive a little early so that they may settle in prior to morning announcements. This also prevents your child from receiving a tardy at 9:10 am.

 All students who are car riders must have a current year car rider tag. These can be obtained from the front office. NO

CHILD WILL BE RELEASED TO ANYONE WHO DOES NOT POSSESS AN LJ-ISSUED CAR RIDER TAG.

All car riders must be picked up at 3:50 pm. If parents are unable to arrive on time, the parent is responsible for making other arrangements for the child to ride a bus or have someone else pick up the child. Being late is not an option.

 If you come to school to check out a student during dismissal, you will be asked to get into the car rider line. Once dismissal begins all checkouts must wait until ALL students are dismissed from car rider lines and to buses. It will be quicker and more efficient to utilize our car rider system. If an emergency arises, permission to checkout can only be

approved by school administration. You must speak to an administrator to get permission.

Any student must be accompanied by an adult in order to/from walk to school. The absence of adult supervision creates an unsafe situation for our students.

CHANGES IN TRANSPORTATION:

If your child needs to be transported to a different location than that indicated at the start of the school year or if he/she needs to be a car rider, please send a note to our office. The change in transportation may only be requested by a parent/guardian and in writing (handwritten note, email with hand-signed signature, or fax) by 3:15 each day. Please call to confirm that the

request has been received by school personnel. Actual changes in transportation via the telephone will not be accepted.

Your child will be given a “change of transportation” permission slip following receipt of your written request. Do not write changes in transportation notes in the student planner. Use a separate sheet of paper so the note can be given to the office.

3

ATTENDANCE

Maximum achievement of a student’s potential can be obtained by a full participation in the total school program. Regular class attendance of all students is expected in order to achieve this goal. We have a yearly attendance goal of 97%. Please help us reach this goal.

Absences from school occur for a variety of reasons. A note from the parent or guardian explaining the absence will be expected after each absence upon the student’s return to school. Valid notes must be received within 5 school days in order

to review for excused/non-excused. When a child sees a doctor, dentist, or goes to a funeral home, you will need to get a note from that office and send it to school when the child returns. We need notes even if you call the school and notify us of the absence or sign your child in or out during the school day.

BCPS policy requires excuse notes to be submitted no later than five school days after the absence. After this time frame, notes will not be accepted.

After six unexcused events or tardies, a report will be filed with the Bullitt County Board of Education. Final determination concerning excused or unexcused events will be made by the principal. The following are acceptable reasons for being absent from school, thus making the absence excusable.

 Personal illness

Professional appointments which cannot be scheduled outside the regular school day

Death in the family

Court appearance required by subpoena or citation

Failure of the school bus to run (This is still an absence, but will be excused.)

Serious illness in the family

Religious holidays and practices

 One day for the Kentucky State Fair

 Other reasons of an extraordinary nature approved by the principal or her designee. Absences for family vacations will not be excused.

***Family vacations are not excused absences. Please make every attempt to schedule vacations on school breaks.***

TARDIES:

Students arriving after 9:10 am and leaving before 3:50 pm will be marked tardy. Notes are needed with the reason for the tardy so that we may determine if it will be excused or unexcused.

There is a limit of six parent notes each school year. All absences beyond those six days must have a note from a health care professional.

In support of regular school attendance, the Bullitt County School District has adopted an Attendance/Truancy Prevention Plan.

The following general sequence of actions shall take place to address absences/truancy:

1.

In response to the first or second unexcused absence, parents/guardians shall receive a personal, direct and documented contact by the teacher, FRYSC coordinator, guidance counselor, assistant principal, or principal.

2.

In response to the third unexcused absence, parents/guardians shall receive formal notification from the school of the student’s status as being truant as defined by Kentucky Revised Statute. Referral of the student shall also be made to

FRYSC coordinator, guidance counselor, district social worker, asst. principal or the principal. This shall result in a personal contact with a parent/guardian which may include a home visit to determine the nature of the absences. This contact/visit shall occur between the third and the fourth unexcused absence.

3.

In response to the fourth or fifth unexcused absence an Administrative/Parent conference shall be conducted by the

Principal, Assistant Principal or Guidance Counselor to address the nature of the absences/truancy.

4.

In response to the sixth unexcused absence, the Principal or the principal’s designee shall make a referral to the DPP who shall notify the parent/guardian of the student’s status as a habitual truant.

5.

Students who continue to accumulate unexcused absences shall be referred to the Court Designated Worker of juvenile court.

6.

Parents/Guardians of students who continue to be truant may be charged with educational neglect, referred to juvenile court, be subject to a fine or suffer other penalties as prescribed by law.

CHECKING STUDENTS OUT EARLY (Counts as a TARDY):

It is the school’s recommendation that students not be checked out early unless it is absolutely necessary. Checking out a student early disrupts the educational process for every child in the classroom. In the event that a child becomes ill, a parent or

4

parental designee will be called. At any point a student leaves school, he/she must first report to the school office and follow proper check-out procedures.

 The person checking out the student must appear on the student’s identification card.

The person checking out the child must show proper photo identification and complete the sign-out sheet.

The person checking out the child must be 18 years old or older.

The above procedure is to keep all of our children safe. Lebanon Junction Elementary adheres to this policy with no exceptions being made.

BIRTHDAYS

The sharing of birthday treats such as cupcakes or cookies is up to the individual classroom teacher. Please confirm with your child’s teacher prior to purchasing a birthday snack. Please keep in mind that we do not hold birthday “parties” at school, but will allow a quick break to celebrate a student’s birthday. If your child’s teacher gives you permission for birthday treats, please drop them by the school office the morning of the birthday and the teacher will pick them up. All snacks brought to school shall be store bought foods in the original package. We do not allow balloons or flower arrangements to be delivered to students.

CLASS ASSIGNMENTS

It is the current procedure of Lebanon Junction Elementary School not to accept parent requests for teachers and / or teaching team. As students enroll after class assignments are made, the principal or his designee will make the student assignment according to appropriate placement and enrollment needs. Class assignments will not be changed during the school year unless the change is deemed appropriate by the principal. No changes regarding student assignment and/or schedules will be made without principal approval. In the event a grade level is over state regulated capacity, the school has until September 15 of the current school year to comply with the capacity regulation. Sometimes this involves adding staff and having to create an additional class. Students will be moved if this is the case. We ask for your cooperation through this process as it is the school’s number one priority to appropriately place students.

COMPASS LEARNING

Compass Learning is an internet-based tool that will take a student where they are academically and move them forward. This program uses the information gained from our Measures of Academic (MAP) test for reading and math and assigns students lessons which will help students improve their areas of weakness and expand in their areas of expertise.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will be given many opportunities to use Compass Learning at school but this fabulous program can also be accessed as a learning tool from home with internet access. The website can be accessed by going to the Lebanon Junction Elementary homepage and clicking on Compass Learning or your child can log into the site directly at http://odyssey.bullittschools.org

. All they need to do is type in their username and password, which is the same as their log-in at school. Your computer must have Flash Player which can be found as a free download at http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ . Visit our school webpage on the “MAP” page to find learn more about this program.

COUNSELING SERVICES

Lebanon Junction Elementary has a full-time guidance counselor to offer assistance to students, staff, and parents. Mr. Weihe provides classroom guidance, individual guidance/counseling, and referrals from teachers and parents. Our guidance counselor treats every child as a unique individual with differing developmental and personal needs. Guidance services strive to enhance the overall potential within every student.

DISCIPLINE

Kentucky Center for Instructional Discipline (KYCID)

Academic and Behavioral Response to Intervention (ABRI)

The goal of the faculty, staff and administration at Lebanon Junction Elementary School is to create and maintain a safe, orderly and positive learning environment. In order to achieve this goal, our school has developed a Positive Support and Intervention

System (PBIS) and ABRI team whose job it is to identify areas of concern in our school, analyze the specific behaviors we wish to see and work with all other adults in our school on how to teach the students to achieve these positive behaviors. This program has been developed by KYCID, the Kentucky Center for Instructional Discipline. We are partnering with U of L for ABRI.

The key to our positive, proactive discipline approach is that there are consistent expectations by all adults throughout our building. Our Pledge of Excellence , which the entire school recites each morning, is the basis for our expectations. Every adult in our building expects ALL students be respectful, responsible, and safe.

5

Teachers have modeled the procedures that we all expect to see in all areas of our building- computer rooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria and playground. Students are reminded to be responsible, respectful and safe.

It is the goal of all adults at Lebanon Junction Elementary that we have a safe, orderly and positive learning environment where all students can learn and become self-disciplined, responsible and productive citizens.

If you would like more information on PBIS, ABRI, or what our school is doing, please feel free to contact any member of the team.

One of the most important objectives of Lebanon Junction Elementary School is to teach students and staff to be responsible for their own behavior and to develop respect for themselves, as well as fellow-students/staff. The purpose of our discipline policy is to ensure the rights of each student and staff person to attend school in a safe, positive, and productive learning environment.

Consequences: All students are responsible for knowing and observing the rules. Violation of these rules shall result in corrective disciplinary action. Any one or a combination of the following actions may be used:

• Teacher / Staff warning.

• Teacher / Student conference.

• Parent notification—discipline note and/or phone call.

• Loss of privileges.

• Parent conference.

• Office/Counselor referral.

• In-school detention (time out).

• Suspension (assigned by Principal only).

Again, parent/teacher communication is essential in dealing with student behavior. Please work with your child’s teacher to ensure that your child is successful.

Suspension: Children who violate the Bullitt County Board of Education Zero Tolerance Policy or who are habitual discipline problems may face an out-of-school suspension. Parents will be notified to come to school to pick-up their child and will conference with the principal or guidance counselor. When a student returns from suspension, a parent may need to check him/her in the morning of the return in the front office.

DRESS CODE

Appearance should not distract from the educational process nor should it disrupt the instructional process. Students should dress in a manner conducive to positive behavior and exhibit dress appropriate to the school environment and learning process.

We encourage our students to be well groomed and wear appropriate school apparel. Failure to follow the Student Dress Code will result in a phone call home to fix the dress code issue.

Student dress shall be appropriate at all times. In order to facilitate this process, the following guidelines on student dress shall be followed:

1.

Shirts of any color shall cover the stomach and back areas when arms are extended or child is bent over.

2.

Students shall not wear halter tops, spaghetti straps, tank tops, low cut shirts, or ill fitted clothing.

3.

Pants of any color shall be worn at the waist and not touch the floor. There shall be no sagging. A belt must be worn if the pants will not stay on the hips.

4.

Students shall not wear form fitting, spandex, leather, nylon, or mesh clothing (see through mesh). Leggings will be permitted under appropriate length clothing (skirt, dress, shorts).

5.

Students shall wear clothing of a size that is appropriate for the size of the child—oversized and undersized clothing is not acceptable.

6.

Dresses, shorts, skorts, and jumpers must be of appropriate length for child's height and body type and not form fitting.

Jumpers must be worn with appropriate shirt or blouse with sleeves.

6

7.

All clothing worn should give the perception of modesty--no short shorts, short skirts, short skorts, and short jumpers. The bottoms of these articles of clothing are to be no shorter than the ends of the fingertips when extended.

8.

Students shall wear socks, stockings, or tights when wearing closed toe shoes.

9.

All shoes that are made to have shoestrings must be tied and secured appropriately with shoestrings.

10.

All footwear must have a heel strap to secure footwear to student’s foot (no flip-flops or thong sandals without heel strap).

11.

Students are not permitted to wear any footwear with a heel taller than 1 inch.

12.

No wearing of chains including wallet chains

No hats/head coverings unless school is having "hat day" activity

No dog collars, bracelets, necklaces, or spiked jewelry.

No sunglasses.

14.

Miscellaneous items:

No body graffiti/including glitter (tattoos must be covered)

 No hair styles/hair color or fashions that distract or disrupt the learning environment

 No torn or tattered clothing

 No body piercing except ears. Students are limited to one pair of earrings, which must be of an appropriate size for a school environment.

13. The principal will make final decisions regarding dress code policy violations.

EMERGENCY DRILLS

Emergency Drills will be held periodically to ensure that every student and adult is familiar with the procedure in case of an emergency. These include tornado, fire, earthquake, and lockdown drills. Teachers will instruct students in procedures for each type of emergency.

Bus Drills are held four times a year. Each child participates in order to know what to do in case of a bus emergency.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

In the event of EMERGENCY, please wait for instructions delivered by BCPS and/or local agencies (Police, Fire, etc…).

Coming to the school can complicate emergency procedures, delay reunification plans, and become a security issue.

Please wait for directions. This will allow school and emergency personnel to ensure the emergency is managed appropriately.

FIELD TRIPS

Field trips are a part of the instructional program and must make a definite contribution to an activity, project, or subject area.

The teacher will send home a permission slip that gives all information concerning the trip. Students are not allowed to participate in a field trip without a signed permission slip from a parent or guardian. In order to act as a parent chaperone, a criminal records check must be on file prior to the trip. The record check cost $10.00 and is good for 2 school years. Only students enrolled at Lebanon Junction Elementary may attend LJES field trips. Chaperones may not bring siblings or other children that aren’t in the same grade/class on the field trip. LJES field trips are educational trips designed to enhance our students’ learning.

**Per state finance regulations, refunds for field trips are prohibited unless the field trip is cancelled. This includes adults. We

cannot issue any refunds for any reason other than cancellation of the entire field trip.

7

HARASSMENT

Harassment can be verbal, non-verbal, or physical and is defined as a behavior that is repeated after a request has been made for it to stop. Harassment will not be tolerated, and students who engage in harassment shall be subject to disciplinary action.

Harassment includes bullying. Incidents of suspected harassment should be reported to a teacher, counselor, or principal.

HEAD LICE

Per District Policy 09.213 AP.11

Upon discovery of head lice on any child within a classroom, the following steps will be taken:

The infested child’s parents will be called to pick up the child and treat his/her hair.

A note will be sent home with each child in the classroom stating that a case of head lice has been discovered in the classroom.

 The entire class may be checked.

Parents: To get rid of lice, all infected family members may use the special shampoo. The shampoo can be obtained from the

Bullitt County Health Department for a nominal charge. All clothing and bed coverings should be washed in hot water, all carpets and upholstered furniture should be thoroughly vacuumed and stuffed animals or bean bags that can’t be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for 30 days.

Once treated, parents must bring the student to the school office for a thorough head-check by school personnel before returning to class. Students sent home with head lice are not permitted to ride the school bus until school personnel have completed the head-check. Students with a second infestation of live head lice shall repeat the above steps and be checked upon readmittance by school personnel. A third live infestation will warrant a referral to district DPP and social workers.

HOMEWORK

Each teacher or team of teachers issue assignments or homework according to what is developmentally appropriate for the ages of students in the respective class. Work assignments assist in establishing responsibility as well as reinforcement of school curriculum.

Teachers are required to provide adequate directions and information related to any type of homework assignment or project.

A project is defined as an assignment to be completed over a specific period of time. Information related to project completion may be updated as the project progresses. All work assignments are expected to be the original work of the student. Parent assistance is always encouraged; however, the student’s work should be original.

If you have a question regarding a classroom assignment or project, please contact your child’s teacher or team.

General: Homework is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experience in school. Homework is given, because it is useful in:

1) reinforcing what has been learned in class,

2) preparing students for upcoming lessons,

3) extending and generalizing concepts,

4) teaching responsibility, and

5) helping students develop positive study habits.

Through homework, parents are kept abreast of the curriculum and are provided a means to make ongoing evaluations of their child’s progress.

Assignments: Homework may not be assigned in each subject every night. The work-study habits of the students, as well as their strengths and weaknesses in subject areas, help determine the type and quantity of homework assigned. Assignments

may be differentiated. Teachers may assign homework on a daily or weekly basis. Monthly projects also may be assigned as homework.

Time Guide: Suggested grade level guidelines for volume of daily homework are as follows: Primary (K-3) 10-30 minutes daily and Intermediate (4 th /5 th ) 30-50 minutes daily. Unfinished class work is not included in the homework time guide. Teachers may require 10-20 additional minutes of recreational reading. Planners are required for grades K- 5 th . Teachers are required to initial student planners each day, and parents are expected to initial the student planners each day. Homework assignment times may

8

vary according to the speed at which children work and manage their time. When no homework is assigned, it is recommended that the student do individual reading or practice math facts and/or spelling words. When it appears that children never have homework, parents are encouraged to contact the teacher. If students are performing excessive amounts of homework on a

regular basis, parents are encouraged to contact the teacher.

Parents: Parents and guardians have a key role in making homework a positive experience for the student. In order to support on-going learning in the classroom, parents and guardians are highly encouraged to make homework a top priority. They are encouraged to set a daily homework time, to provide necessary supplies and a quiet environment, and to provide praise and support for the student.

Procedures: To ensure that homework is kept as a top priority, the following procedures may be implemented by the classroom teacher when homework is not completed.

 A verbal reminder to the student.

 A note is to be sent home informing the parent of the missed assignment.

 A phone call home (conference)

Rewards/Encouragement: Teachers/Teams will develop a system of rewards/encouragement to promote healthy homework habits.

INFINITE CAMPUS

Infinite Campus is the student data system in place throughout the state of Kentucky. This system is used for recording student attendance, grades, and behavior. All parents can obtain access to the Parent Portal of Infinite Campus. Parents of students in grades four and five can view student grades as recorded in the grade book as well as attendance and behavior notes. Parents of students in kindergarten through grade three can view attendance, behavior, and each quarter grade as recorder on the report card. To obtain access to this site, a parent or guardian must come to school and verify their family’s household data. At that time an access code will be given. Directions to access the Parent Portal are posted on the Bullitt County Schools home page. Parents are required to keep all student information updated. Please notify the school office of any changes to your child’s enrollment information.

MEALS

Breakfast will be served each morning 8:40 – 9:00. Students may choose to eat breakfast or go directly to the classroom.

Each class has a scheduled lunchtime. Students will sit together as a class in the cafeteria. All students must eat a lunch, whether it is brought from home or bought at school unless we are notified in writing from a parent or guardian. FOOD FROM

RESTAURANTS SHALL NOT BE BROUGHT IN TO STUDENTS FOR LUNCH. Students with special dietary needs must have a letter from their doctor. Students bringing their lunch from home may purchase milk or juice from the cafeteria. Carbonated beverages and glass containers may not be brought to the lunchroom.

LJES is a “Community Eligibility Provision” school. Therefore, all school meals are provided FREE OF CHARGE to ALL students.

Extras are not included in this program.

2015-2016 Meal prices would be:

Student breakfast….$1.25 Student breakfast (reduced fee)….$.30

Student lunch………..$2.45 Student lunch (reduced fee)………..$.40

**Extra items are not covered by the CEP program. There is a fee for those items.

Parents may send in money for their child’s lunch account. The cafeteria manager will notify students on the day their lunch account is depleted so that parents will know to deposit additional funds the following day.

Parents, guardians, grandparents, or other immediate family members as approved by the principal/designee may have lunch with their child. These family members must be on the child’s locator card and must present a valid picture ID. A handwritten note giving permission from a parent/guardian will also be accepted. Otherwise, except for authorized district personnel, each school shall observe a closed campus at lunch.

Charging Procedures: Charging is not permitted on additional/extra items.

9

MEDICAL INFORMATION

Medical Disability/Allergy: If your child has a medical disability or allergy, this should be reported to your child’s homeroom teacher. If this disability or allergy needs special attention, please submit a doctor’s note.

First Aid: Several staff members at Lebanon Junction Elementary School are trained in first aid. Students who require first aid for minor injuries are to report to the office. More seriously injured students are not to be moved, and their injury must be reported immediately. Parents will be notified to come to the school when a serious injury occurs.

Parents will be expected to have students picked up in a reasonable amount of time when a child is running a fever, may be contagious, or feels too bad to continue with the normal school routine.

Medication Administration for Students: Medication is to be given only with the parent or legal guardian’s written permission.

BCPC Board Policy 09.2241 requires all prescription medications be dispensed using form 09.2241 AP21 which must have a doctor’s signature.

Medication must be brought to school in the original prescription container by an adult.

 Information listed on the container shall include the student’s name and the name of the prescribed medication as well as the dosage of medication with all dates listed.

Students taking prescription drugs while at school or at a school-related activity must register their medication with the

Principal’s office.

MEDICATIONS MUST BE IN ORIGINAL CONTAINER.

 All requirements set out in administrative procedures have been met.

Again, all prescription medications must be accompanied by a completed form with the doctor and parent signature. Over-the- counter medications must also be accompanied by the appropriate form signed by the parent. Over-the-counter medications may only be administered and/or dispensed for a three (3) day period. Over-the-counter medications needed for more than

three days will require the appropriate form signed by parent and attending physician. The necessary form is located in the back of this handbook.

A medical log will be kept in the office. Failure to follow appropriate procedures may result in disciplinary action.

NEWSLETTERS

Lebanon Junction Elementary will be sending home a monthly school newsletter at the beginning of each month. The newsletter will include a calendar of events and other items of interest to our students and their families. Each grade level team will send home a weekly class newsletter each Monday. In addition, parents may register for Lebanon Junction Elementary E-

News on the BCPS home page.

OBSERVATIONS

All classroom observations require the approval of the principal. Appointments should be made in advance for observations and/or post observation conferences. Once permission is obtained, you will be assigned an observation time. Observations should last no more than 1 hour. During the observation, you are asked not to interact with the students or adults in the classroom. Please understand that due to privacy and confidentiality laws; no audio, video, or still photography will be

permitted. Be aware that classroom visitors often distract the students and that what you see may be different than what occurs on a regular basis. LJES strives to provide consistent, high quality instruction at all times. We welcome parents to be active in their child’s education. Please understand that all children are affected when observations take place. This is why we try to ensure that the learning environment is protected.

Teachers may only take Parent/Guardian phone calls during their planning times or before/after school. This ensures instruction is not interrupted.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Because you, as a parent, play such an important role in your child’s education, we want to encourage you to become an active member of our school community. You can become directly involved with your child’s school life by:

Being Visible—attend open house and parent–teacher conferences so that you and your child’s teacher can get to know each other. Join and support our Parent Teacher Association.

Being a Volunteer—Parent volunteers enable our school to provide many of the extra touches that will make for a better education for your child.

We encourage any parent who wishes to become involved with Lebanon Junction Elementary to consider volunteering.

10

Partners in Your Child’s Education

Parents and teachers both want the same thing for our children—the best possible education. When we work together, we make a strong team. Here are some ways you can help the school do a better job.

• See that your child attends school regularly for the whole day and comes to school on time with all needed supplies.

• Support the school in its efforts to maintain proper discipline.

• Be aware of what your child is learning in school. Check the Student Planner daily.

• Let us know if your child has any problems outside of school that might affect his/her school work.

• If you have concerns or questions about any aspect of our school program, share them with us. Your child’s teacher(s) and principal can often give you the information you need.

PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION

We encourage you to become a member of our Parent Teacher Association. The PTA allows our school to improve educational and programming opportunities for students. To join the LJES PTA, there is a form to fill out and $6 membership fee. PTA meetings and activities will be held throughout the school year. We welcome your attendance and support. Watch for meeting and activity dates. Students must be accompanied by a parent to all PTA/school sponsored events. No child may be dropped off at school to attend an after school event.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

There will be parent / teacher conferences scheduled, usually one in the fall and one in the spring. However, teachers are available during the school day by appointment. Should a parent request a conference with a teacher or teachers, they are to make an appointment through the teacher(s) or call the front office. Good parent/teacher communication is important to enhance student progress. We ask that you schedule a conference because unannounced visits may disrupt the instructional time for many students.

You may also reach any member of our faculty/staff through e-mail using the following information: firstname.lastname@bullitt.kyschools.us

SCHOOL CLOSING PROCEDURES

In the event schools must be closed, the following procedures will be used:

 The announcement will be made on local television and radio if school is to be closed that day.

School will be closed one day at a time unless the announcement on the TV/Radio states otherwise.

As soon as the decision is made to close school the following day, the announcement will be made on TV/radio.

PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL, THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OFFICE, OR YOUR PRINCIPAL. They will not know about school closing prior to the TV/radio announcement, and it is impossible for them to answer calls from everyone.

In the event that school must be dismissed before the regular time, the announcement will be made on local TV/radio so that parents may make arrangements for someone to be at home to meet the children. Your cooperation in following the above procedures will be greatly appreciated and will make our operation at these times much easier. A form will be sent home. Please fill it out and tell your child what to do in case school is dismissed. We are unable to call all parents, so make arrangements ahead of time. Update as needed.

When the schools are closed or dismissed early for emergency reasons, all school-sponsored activities and programs will be automatically cancelled or postponed.

VISITORS

SAFETY is a primary focus at LJ. All visitors, including parents, must show a VALID picture ID to sign in at the front office and receive a visitor’s badge or pass before reporting to any area within the building. LJ is responsible for each person in our building, students and adults. Each visitor must state their intended purpose for their visit. Parents are not to go directly into their child’s classroom nor are they to wait / watch outside the classroom. This can sometimes create a disruptive situation within the classroom and instructional time is lost. Please honor your intended purpose. We love having families in our school as long as the educational process is not interrupted.

Siblings of Lebanon Junction Elementary students enrolled in other schools are not permitted to visit students during the instructional day, during classroom parties and/or special functions (e.g. Field Day, etc.). This policy includes preschool aged siblings.

VOLUNTEERS

Criminal Background Checks: In compliance with Board of Education Policy 161.044, ALL ADULTS who attend field trips or volunteer at Lebanon Junction Elementary must undergo a criminal background check. This background check must be completed and approved prior to attending trips and/or volunteering. Please visit the school volunteer office to complete this

EARLY in the school year. Background checks are $10.00 and are effective for 2 years. This must be on file in the school office.

Volunteers at Lebanon Junction Elementary are to sign-in with the volunteer coordinator and register in the appropriate log.

Coordinators schedule parent / grandparent volunteers to assist in various areas within the school. Volunteers make a great addition to the overall programming within the school, be it tutoring students, working on materials for teachers, or just being a helping hand with various projects. We encourage you to be a volunteer.
