Ancient China ~ Lesson 4 ~ Part Two
Directions: Complete task 5 and then choose between task 6 and task 7. Both of these
items are due Thursday, May 5th in person or emailed to Mr. Merel at:
jasonmerel@cgw.uei-schools.org.  Check off the items you are planning to complete.
You Must Complete Task FIVE
____Task 5: Wish You Were Here! (40 points)
Objective: By the end of this task you should be able to analyze the culture of Carter G.
Woodson Middle School from the perspective of Confucius.
Directions:
1. Review pages 427-429 in your textbook.
2. Imagine Confucius has spent a week observing the lives of students and the
culture of Carter G. Woodson Middle School. Upon his return to China, Confucius
decided to write to you and share his feelings about our school.
3. Design a set of 4 post cards (or greeting cards) that evaluate the following items:
A. Confucius’ reaction to how families of CGW get along and treat each other.
B. Confucius’ reactions to how teachers treat students.
C. Confucius’ reactions to how women are treated in school (staff and
students).
D. Confucius’ reaction to whether or not students and staff follow the Golden
Rule.
4. Your cards must show your true understanding of Confucius and his philosophy about
life. Demonstrate your mastery of his teachings by applying your knowledge to what he
might think about CGW. Be honest!
5. You may draw them or create them with the aid of a computer.
6. Each card must have creativity, beauty, color, and neatness.

____Task 6: Han Top of the World, Ma! (60 points)
Objective: By the end of this task you should be able to evaluate the significance of the
achievements of the Han Dynasty.
Directions:
1. Review pages 444-447 in your textbook and a few websites covering the achievements
of the Han Dynasty (you can find your own, too):

2. Then, make a t-chart that describes and illustrates each of the Han Dynasty’s
contributions to the world. Your t-chart should look like this:

3. You must include the following six items in your t-chart: civil service,
seismograph, iron plow, Silk Road, paper, and acupuncture.
4. Finally, choose the achievement you believe had the biggest impact on the Han
Dynasty and ancient China. Them, write a 5-7-sentence paragraph explaining why
you believe this is so. Use details supporting your decision, evidence to back it up,
and prior knowledge to enhance the quality of your response.
____Task 7: The Han That Rocks The Cradle (60 points)
Objective: By the end of this task you should be able to evaluate the significance of the
achievements of the Han Dynasty.
Directions:
1. Review pages 444-447 in your textbook and a few websites covering the achievements
of the Han Dynasty (you can find your own, too):

2. Make a picture book about the great achievements of the Han Dynasty designed
for a little sister, cousin, or even Mr. Merel’s daughter!
3. You must include the following six items in your book: civil service, seismograph,
iron plow, Silk Road, paper, and acupuncture.
4. All achievements must include a 2-3-sentence caption that gives a complete
description of each achievement: what it was, when it was created, where it was
used, who benefited from this item, and how it worked.
5. On the last page of your picture book, choose the achievement you believe had the
biggest impact on the Han Dynasty and ancient China. You must include a 5-7sentence paragraph explaining why you believe this is so. Use details supporting
your decision, evidence to back it up, and prior knowledge to enhance the quality of
your response.
6. Your book must have a title/cover page complete with your name and homeroom.
7. The book must be in color, clearly written or typed, and pictures and writing must
be neat (no pencil).
