Lord of the Flies

Characterization and Symbolism worksheet

Chapters 1-6

READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!

Open in Pages. Work with your assigned partner. Keep in mind that you need to collaborate actively on your handout. This is due at the end of the class to Showbie. If the sub tells you that you must work alone, then you must work alone. Partners are a privilege for those who are behaving responsibly.

As you complete the characterization portion, consider each character and the changes that he has undergone over the course of the novel. (Chapters 1-6 only) You may list characteristics and you do not need to write in complete sentences. When you write your quotes, you can include whichever quotes you desire, as long as they relate to the character. For instance, you do not need to have a quote from that actual

character; it can be a quote by the narrator or even something said by someone else regarding the character.

Symbolism Portion

Firstly consider the 4 objects listed and consider what they might represent or symbolize.

List what you and your partner come up with in terms of what it symbolizes and then consider if it changes in its meaning. If it does change, indicate that. You may list your ideas for this chart.

Conch Shell Signal Fire Piggy’s Glasses The Beast Symbol

What does it symbolize? If the symbol changes, list what it represents later in the novel vs earlier in the novel.
