COURSE AIMS
The course of Latin Language – level A is a one-year course (60 hours) and it is
part of the department of Latin Literature I (prof. Castagna). It is aimed at
providing the basic notions of the Latin language to
– those who have never studied it
– those who have never translated from Latin at high school
– those who have elementary notions of the language
– those who want to review their basic Latin notions.
The course is composed of two modules: module I (first semester, 30 hours,
Dott.ssa S. Stucchi) and module II (second semester, 30 hours, dott. M. Zuliani).
The Latin language A course, at the end of which an oral examination will be held,
must be attended before the course of Latin language B (Dott.ssa Chiara Riboldi),
that must be attended the following academic year.
COURSE CONTENT
– Notions of Latin morphology and morphosyntax: cases, declensions, cases, I
principali complementi, basic notions of the syntax of the verb and of the noun.
– Translation of short Latin texts.
– Notions for the Latin word-study.

TEACHING METHOD
The course is composed of a theoretic part and a practical part, with different types of
exercises, mainly translations. During the course the homework will be always corrected,
the mistakes and the students’ dubts will be taled over.
Students are strongly requested to a diligent attendance, if possible, to do homework and
to a diligent home study in order to a progressive and lasting acquisition of skills the course
aims at providing.
ASSESSMENT METHOD
Oral examination.
NOTES
Take note that both the course and the oral examination of Latin Language A are
compulsory for all those students who have never studied Latin or who have never translated
Latin at high school. The oral examination of Latin Language A must be taken after
attending the whole one-year course (module I, Prof. Stucchi and module II, Prof. Zuliani).
Before the exam of Latin Literature, the students who will have passed the Latin Language
A exam will have to attend, the following year, the one-year course of Language B (dott.ssa
Chiara Riboldi) and they will have to pass the oral examination.
The students who have studied Latin and translated from Latin at high school will
immediately attend the course of Language B. After passing the oral examination, they will
take the exam of Latin Literature.
All the oral examinations must always be taken before the exam of Literature. In order
to take the oral examinations of Language A and B students don’t need to enrol but they
only need to turn up where the exam of Latin Literature (Prof. L. Castagna) is held.

COURSE AIMS
To provide students, who have already studied Latin on course A, the chance to
revise and further their morphological and syntactic understanding of the Latin
language. Students will be taught how to understand and translate texts in Latin.
COURSE CONTENT
– Linguistic structures: revision of morphology.
– Aspects of noun, verb and sentence syntax.
READING LIST
For systematically revising Latin grammar, students are advised to use the following
textbook:

For studying vocabulary they should consult:
L. BOTTIN-M.M.GIGLIOTTI, Origo, Minerva Italica, Milan, 1997.

Students will also be familiar with:
A. TRAINA-T. BERNARDI PERINI, Propedeutica al latino universitario, Pàtron, Bologna, 1992.
TEACHING METHOD
Revision of morphological and syntactic knowledge will be based on study of the
foundations of normative grammar. This will be followed by supervised practical work on
selected topics.
ASSESSMENT METHOD
The aim of this “bridging” course is for students to study and reinforce the
understanding of Latin grammar they acquired on course A, so that they are ready to attend
lectures on course B. For this reason there will be no examinations.
