Website: The math department website can be accessed through Carlton’s Home
Page: http://www.carlton.srsd119.ca/. On this site you will find links to each teacher’s
homepage, outcome rubrics for the math classes, and video lessons for some of the
classes (we are working to complete video lessons for all classes).
If you are going to be away from class, it is expected that you will get the materials that
you missed. There are video lessons that you are expected to watch from home on the
Carlton Home Page. You must also complete any practice questions that you missed
that day.
CLASS EXPECTATIONS: It is my hope that each of you experience success in this class. It
is my job to help you in any way that I can, however, ultimately it is your responsibility for
making that happen. You can do that by following a few simple steps BE AN ACTIVE LEARNER – “Math is not a spectator sport”
 LISTEN carefully & ask questions & get the help you need
 TAKE GOOD NOTES – be organized
 COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS - remember missed assignments are your
responsibility
 STUDY for exams and quizzes
 Use your CLASS TIME EFFICIENTLY and do homework each day
MATH HELP: Miss Dyck will offer noon hour three days every week. They will normally be
Tuesday – Thursday every week, but may be on a Monday or Friday if there is a day that
Miss Dyck cannot attend. The noon hour help schedule will be posted in the classroom.
Please feel free to drop in. Take advantage of this opportunity for one-on-one
assistance if you are having difficulty. It may be all that you need to clear up the
problem. Be aware that the noon hour help sessions offered by Miss Dyck are during
her own personal time, and are not intended to be used instead of working during class
time. If you are not using class time effectively, noon hour help will not be offered.
There will also be a math tutor available free of charge, in the school library from 3:30 –
4:30 pm after school, typically Monday-Thursday each week. Please see the student
announcements for the exact days that it is offered.
LATES: Punctuality is another key to success in this class. You are expected to be in the
classroom and prepared to begin at the bell each day. If you arrive late enter the
classroom silently and get to work. You will be required to complete a late form which
must be completed by the end of the period.
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT:
Music: You are allowed to listen to music during designated work times. You are not
allowed to listen to music during teaching times or group work. This privilege will be lost if
it becomes a distraction to you or those around you. Your music must not be able to
be heard by anyone else in the class.
Cell Phones: CELL PHONES MAY NOT BE USED AS A CALCULATOR, EVEN DURING CLASS
WORK.
Miss Dyck’s Cell Phone Policy
1. Cell phones are not to be used during lessons or course work.
2. If you are caught playing games/using your cell phone excessively when you still
have work to complete, you will be asked to put your cell phone away. If you
are again caught playing games/using your phone excessively, Miss Dyck will
take your phone until you have completed your work and it is checked by Miss
Dyck.
3. Once you have completed the assigned work, and it has been checked by Miss
Dyck, you may use your phone.
Food and Drink: Please do not bring food into class. A water bottle, or a sealable bottle
is allowed.
Assessment: You will not see percentage grades on any of your assessments. You will
not see a percentage until the final report card. Every assessment will be graded on a
4 point scale using a rubric. These rubrics are posted on the math website, so you can
see what each level means. Instead of one overall grade for an assessment, you may
have multiple levels for specific outcomes.
The student can continue to work on any outcome and reassess it throughout the year
at the teacher’s discretion. A minimum of level 2 is expected on EVERY outcome. At
midterm, you will receive a progress report which will indicate what level each
outcome is currently at. If there are any outcomes below a level 2, you are expected to
continuing working on these. If you are still below a level 2, and a reassessment is not
completed before the final exam, the final exam outcome level will be final. Failure to
achieve the minimum expected level of two would result in not all outcomes being met,
and you would not obtain your Pre-Calculus 30 credit.
Assessment Policy
Each outcome will be assessed promptly after its completion. A second assessment of
each outcome will not occur until our midterm assessment (roughly halfway through the
semester). A third assessment will happen on a final exam at the end of the semester.
A student may reassess before the midterm/final assessment given that they have
completed ALL the assigned work from the given outcome. These outcome
assignments must be handed in PRIOR to writing the reassessment, and checked over
by Miss Dyck.
If you know that you are going to be away during an outcome assessment, let Miss
Dyck know that you will be away ASAP so that an alternate day can be arranged. If
you miss an assessment, you will need to write the assessment during a noon hour, and
hand in ALL your assignments. ALL STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN ATTENDANCE FOR
THE MIDTERM AND FINAL ASSESSMENTS.
