COURSE OVERVIEW HONORS CALCULUS 5 CREDITS DESCRIPTION This is an introductory Calculus course. Students who are successful in this course will be prepared to study Calculus at the college level. In this course, students will be introduced to the theories of calculus while applying calculus techniques to solve application problems in a variety of areas. Students should possess a strong math background, especially in the areas of algebra and trigonometry. This developmental course is designed to develop students technological and problem solving abilities in the 21st century. INSTRUCTOR AND MEETING INFORMATION Instructor: John March Phone: 856-468-1445 x2050 E-Mail: jmarch@gcecnj.org Room: 202 MTWRF COURSE GOALS It is the goal of this class to give the student a foundation for the study of calculus. Students will use the technology of the graphing calculator to assist with this study. COURSE OBJECTIVES The student will Review prerequisite algebra, geometry and pre-calculus topics. Investigate and apply limits and their properties. Determine and apply the derivative of a function. Solve a variety of problems involving the application of the derivative. Apply basic integration rules to determine integrals for a given function. REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS Students are expected to arrive in class promptly with their notebook, pencils and other required materials. During class students are expected to participate and show proper respect to their teacher and classmates. Of course, students will be expected follow all rules of behavior listed in the school handbook. Students will be given homework on most nights. These assignments need to be completed by the designated time in order that the student is prepared for class and any upcoming assessments. COURSE WORK AND ASSESSMENT Students will be assessed based on their results on quizzes and tests. The purpose of homework is to better prepare students for the assessments. Homework will be graded on an as needed basis and will be graded on both accuracy and completeness. Tests will occur at the end of each unit and are based on 100 points. Quizzes will have a point value of up to 40 points, and may be given at any time, with or without prior notice. Students will always be given advanced notice of tests. If a formula sheet is to be utilized during an assessment, one will be provided one by the instructor. The grade for the course will be determined by computing the mathematical average of the points earned by the student divided by the number of possible points. GRADING POLICY Grades will be based on assessments, homework and projects. There will be two Benchmark exams along with a Final Exam. Benchmarks will be worth 150 points and the Final will be worth 200 points. Throughout the semester students will be required to complete Achieve 3000 articles. Students will be graded based on their first attempt at these articles. Retakes will no longer be administered for any assessments with the exception of those students with IEP or 504 accommodations. TEXTBOOK INFORMATION Calculus of a Single Variable, 10th edition, Larson, Hostetler and Edwards, Houghton Mifflin Co, 2013. COURSE POLICIES Arrive to class on time prepared to learn. Bring all supplies and assignments with you when you come to class. Listen to others and participate in class. Respect the rights of others- do not interrupt fellow students’ learning. Hats are not to be worn in class. Always do your best and have a positive attitude. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Students are required to bring the following items to class: A notebook, a sharpened pencil, graph paper, and a calculator. CALCULATOR REQUIREMENTS For students who may be taking high level math classes such as calculus, our math department recommends a graphing calculator, such as the TI-83 Plus or the TI-84. These models retail for about $100.00. DISTRICT ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION AND RECORDING POLICY The Board of Education believes pupils and/or school staff members should not be subject to having a video or audio recording taken of any pupil(s) or school staff member(s) for any purpose without the consent of the pupil, the pupil’s parent or guardian, and/or the school staff member. In addition to protecting the privacy rights of pupils and school staff members, the Board recognizes such recordings can be disruptive to the educational program. In addition, inappropriate recordings of educational material, pupil assessment instruments, and/or pupil assessment reviews can be used to compromise the integrity of the district’s educational program or lead to academic dishonesty in the event such recordings are stored and/or transmitted to other pupils. Therefore, the Board of Education adopts this Policy regarding pupil use of electronic communication and recording devices. MY CELL PHONE POLICY To help comply with the new district policy regarding electronic communication and recording policy, cell phones are strictly forbidden in my classroom. The first time a student is caught with their cell phone, it will be taken from them for the duration of the period. If it becomes a persistent problem, disciplinary action will be taken.
