Phineas Banning High School Mathematics Department AP Calculus AB Course Syllabus Fall 2012 Instructor: Mr. Garibay Room: 116 Email: rxg9213@lausd.net Room Phone: 1116 Welcome to AP Calculus! This class is being taught with the belief that all students can learn and all students can be academically and socially successful. However, in order to succeed in this class, the student must put in the effort and time necessary to master the material. Course Description: AP Calculus offers students their first opportunity to attempt collegiate level mathematics. This course has two distinct goals: First, to learn and appreciate Calculus as a significant mathematical and scientific tool and as a human achievement. Second, to prepare for the College Board’s Advanced Placement Examination in Calculus (AB) to be given on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Passing this examination may earn the student college credit when they enroll in a four year institution in the Fall of 2013. Our textbook is Calculus (Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic) by Ross L. Finney, Franklin D. Demana and Bert K. Waits (Third Edition), 2007. Supplemental materials include, but are not limited to relevant materials developed by the community of AP Calculus instructors and the College Board. Worksheets of test aids and resources for AP Exam preparation will be provided to each student during the second semester of this course. A graphing calculator (the TI-83 or TI-84 is particularly recommended) is required. Students who are unable to obtain their own calculator may check out a calculator for the year in a manner somewhat similar to that of checking out textbooks. Grading: Your tests are 90% of your grade and your homework is 10% of your grade. Grading Scale: A 89 % - 100 % D 50 % - 63.99 % B Fail 77 % - 88.99 % 0 % - 49.99 % C 64 % - 76.99 % Tutoring: I am available everyday during Nutrition, Lunch and until 4:00 pm most days to help students. NOTE: Student and Parents will be notified if a student is failing or in danger of failing on the 5 week, 10 week, and 15 week report cards, during parent conferences, PHBAO conferences and by phone. Calculus A Chapter 1: Limits and Continuity Chapter 2: Derivatives/Differentiation Chapter 3: Applications of Derivatives (100 pts) (200 pts) (300 pts) Calculus B Chapter 4: Anti-Differentiation, Integration and Area Chapter 5: Area and Volume Chapter 6: Exponents, Logarithms and L’Hopitals Rule (400 pts) (200 pts) (200 pts) Citizenship: Every student is expected to attend every class and to be ready to learn: Bring pencil, paper, and notebook to class every day unless told otherwise. You will need a graphing calculator. Participate in all class activities. This is a college level course offered in the high school. The highest standard of conduct and integrity is required at all times. Disruption of instruction cannot be tolerated. Exams: Exams will be announced ahead of time. All exams are cumulative. You must learn the material and not memorize it temporarily. If a student misses an exam he/she must do a make-up exam after school. If a student wants to take a make-up exam it must be after school and the student will only be allowed to take a make up exam if they have not missed more than THREE homework assignments for the chapter they want to take the make up exam for. NOTE: You will need to be available after school to finish exams. If a student is truant, they will not be allowed to make up an exam. If a student receives a D or Fail on any exam a notice will be sent to your parents via a phone call. Homework: Homework will be assigned daily. Homework will be checked the day after it is assigned at the beginning of class. No late work will be accepted! My Expectations: Of me, your teacher Of you, my student 1. Strive to attend school every day. ASK questions and be a part of the conversation. Attendance and participation are different things. READ your text. It would be pretty silly for me to simply repeat the text's material in class. So I expect you to read so we can do other activities in class. Commit to complete all activities and assignments and turn them in on time. Get help early (don't wait until it's too late!). Note: Enrolling in AP Calculus and passing the class takes a lot of responsibility, hard work and time. It also gives you exposure to college level material. The material being taught is taught at an accelerated pace and successful completion requires at least six hours of individual study time per week. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Student Agreement I have read the description and syllabus for this AP course and am familiar with the course expectations and accept its academic challenges.
