COAD Meeting Minutes April 3, 2014 – Clark Justice Center, Fire Conference Room Those present: Sandy Blackford, Wendi Douglas, Debbie Fitzgerald, Deb Kenny, Kathy Lewis, Mac McKeough, Susi Rhoads-Mickels, Dan Pekarek, Julie Stolting, Tammy Walker and Randy Crane. Secretary/Treasurers Report Julie Stolting reminded everyone to be sure to sign in. Wendi Douglas made a motion to accept the minutes from March, Dan King seconded the motion, all were in favor and the motion passed. Dan King gave the treasurers report. The current balance in the bank account is $44,906.08. There were no expenditures in March. Emergency Management Update – no report as Ketih Stammer was not present. Health Department Update Dan Pekarek gave a brief update on the EPA grant. The program will be highlighted in the next City Newsletter. Agency Updates Catholic Charities has funds through Emergency Solutions Grant for people who are at risk of becoming homeless. They also have funds through Missouri Housing Trust Fund for home repair and rebuilding. Ozark Center’s crisis team reports that their work is slowing. They have had some weather related calls recently with the stormy weather. There was some general discussion regarding emergency kits. Fuller Center for Housing will begin building a new home and should break ground in approximately six weeks. They can accept donated blighted or abandon homes that are still structurally sound to rehab for families. Legal Aid continues to have a variety of legal services available for low income people. Economic Security Corporation will have funds to re-house homeless families. The funds are through Missouri Housing Trust Fund. Volunteer Village continues to work with volunteers in the area. Red Cross is hosting Red Cross Academies May 29th through May 31st. Free CPR is available on a first come first serve basis. The Pillow Case Project will be available for 3rd -5th graders. The catalogs will be sent out once they get final approval. Crosslines reports that they will remain in their current building. The Interfaith Group plans to do work in the Crosslines Garden on April 26th. There was some discussion regarding some vandalism at Red Cross and with the Art feeds bus. Old Business Dan King reviewed the proposed changes to the Bylaws. Dan King made a motion to accept the proposed changes, Debbie Kenny seconded the motion, all were in favor and the motion passed. Julie Stolting reviewed the slate officers. There were no other nominations. There was some discussion regarding building the COAD back up and inviting agency’s to attend meetings. Selecting and working on a project was discussed. Project Ideas Storm Ready Community Self-Sheltering Getting a fresh review on the City of Joplin’s Sheltering plan and Animal Sheltering plan. Developing a volunteer corps to help with mass vaccinations and other events. Medical reserve corps PR Activities – when to shelter in place, getting prepared, Map Your Neighborhood, etc. Website and Facebook pages for LTRC and COAD There was some discussion regarding public shelters and whether or not Joplin has any. Follow up with Keith Stammer will take place to get accurate information on the subject. Wendi Douglas will secure a location in Carthage for the next COAD meeting. The meetings will be moved around in order to draw other agencies and businesses to the table. Debbie Fitzgerald gave an update on the Map Your Neighborhood program. She reported that people either really liked it or wanted to do it or they did not want any part of it. Wendi Douglas will follow up with Stephanie Brady on merging the COAD and LTRC Facebook pages.
