Assignment B Useful Chemical Products Scenario You work as a junior laboratory technician at a chemical products company specialising in supplying materials on a large scale. Your company has just won a major contract to supply a local construction plant with all of its chemical products for its equipment and other uses. As part of the contract, the construction plant managers have asked for technical information about the chemical substances to be supplied and are looking for advice on which chemical substance they should use for the construction of a new mining-drill head. Task 1: What’s your special power? 1 RESOURCES The construction plant company is to place a bulk order for ten chemical substances that they need: Use/equipment Your chemical product Fire extinguisher Carbon dioxide Electrical wires Copper Welding Argon Lubricant Graphite Abrasive Silicon dioxide Paint Titanium dioxide Dehumidifier Calcium chloride Air bags Sodium azide Tools Iron Computer circuits Silicon a) produce an information booklet/leaflet for each of four of those in the table above. Using appropriate websites and/or textbooks and/or chemical data books, research the following for each of the chemical products you chose: Chemical properties –chemical reactivity; type of chemical bonding and structure; outer electron arrangement (2.B P5) Physical properties – thermal and electrical conductivity; melting and boiling points; solubility in different solvents; viscosity etc. Other uses and applications. (2.B P4) b) Examine each of the chemical and physical properties for your four different chemical products and explain: What these properties mean (2.B P4 P5) 2. Which chemical and physical properties contribute to the intended use and why these properties are needed? (2.B P4 P5) The construction plant company is considering whether to use diamond, titanium or aluminium oxide to make their drill heads. They have asked you to provide them with a report analysing the three materials, and recommending which material to use. These are the specific points the company has asked you to include in your report: An explanation of the chemical and physical properties of diamond, titanium and aluminium oxide. (2.B M4) What the ideal properties required from a material used in the manufacture of drill heads would be. (2.B M4) Finally, based on your research and knowledge of these chemicals, which of diamond, titanium and aluminium oxide would you recommend and why? (2.B D3) The grading criteria that this assignment relates to: P4 Describe how chemical substances are used based on their physical properties P5 Describe how chemical substances are used based on their chemical properties M4 Explain how physical and chemical properties of chemical substances make them suitable for their uses D3 Assess the suitability of different types of substance for a specified use If you have not achieved the Level 2 criteria, your work will be assessed to determine if the following Level 1 criteria have been met. Criterion To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to: Unit reference Describe physical properties of chemical substances 2 1B.4 Describe chemical properties of chemical substances 2 1B.5 Evidence you must produce for this task; Level Description Table 1 research notes completed on 4 chemicals 2B.P4 2B.P5 2B.P4 2B.P5 For the 4 different chemicals from above an explanation of 1. What these properties mean 2. Which chemical and physical properties contribute to the Checklist Part 2B.M4 Part 2B.M4 2B.D3 intended use and why these properties are needed. Table 2 completed for the chemical and physical properties of diamond, titanium and aluminium oxide. A description of the ideal properties required from a material used in the manufacture of drill heads. An explanation of which of diamond, titanium and aluminium oxide would you recommend and why? 2 questions off slide.
