September 2014
Dear Colleagues and friends:
As I begin my term as President of the ASPNR, I’d like to thank Richard “Rick” Robertson, our 20132014 President, as well as the members of the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and all the
committee members for their hard work on behalf of all the Society’s members. It will be very difficult to
follow in his footsteps. However with the support of the entire ASPNR membership and Executive
Committee, it will be a pleasure and I promise to give my best.
ASPNR 2015 Nominations…
The Nominating Committee, chaired by Dr. Erin Simon Schwartz, is seeking nominations of ASPNR
Members in good standing for the 2015-2016 election for the offices of Treasurer and Member-at-Large
of the Executive Committee. Please submit your nominations via e-mail to Kristine Kulpaka at the
Headquarters Office (kkulpaka@asnr.org). On the subject line of your e-mail, indicate: ASPNR
Nomination. The deadline is October 31, 2014.
ASPNR Gold Medal Award…
We’re seeking nominations for the 2015 Gold Medal Award. Nominations must be received at the
ASPNR Headquarters Office by October 31, 2014. Please review the important Gold Medal Award
Criteria and list of past recipients, enclosed with this mailing.
Call for Committee Service…
Our Society could not properly function without individuals willing to volunteer their time and talents.
All members are encouraged to become involved in our Society, and we would like to know if you are
interested in serving on a committee for 2015-2016. While only a limited number of openings are
available, the Executive Committee would like to be aware of individuals who are interested and willing
to serve. Please review the composition and responsibilities for the committees on the form enclosed
with this mailing, complete the information as instructed, and return it to the Headquarters Office
by October 31, 2014. You will be helping yourself, your profession, and your specialty.
ASPNR Twelfth Annual Award in Pediatric Neuroradiology Research…
The Foundation of the ASNR supports and encourages the subspecialty societies in Neuroradiology to
create endowments within the Foundation for education and research in Pediatric Neuroradiology, Head
and Neck Radiology, Functional Neuroradiology, and Spine Radiology.
A call for submissions is included with this mailing. Eligible applicants are asked to submit a Letter of
Intent via e-mail by October 31, 2014. Following a review, authors of the most promising proposals will
be asked to submit an application. In order to encourage interest in our subspecialty and in
Neuroradiology in general, medical students and radiology residents are strongly encouraged to apply.
The 2015 stipend will be $20,000, with an additional $2,500 towards education, for a total of
$22,500.
-2Call for AJNR Reviewers ...
Anyone wishing to review pediatric articles for the American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR) should
contact Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Mauricio Castillo at castillo@med.unc.edu.
ASNR/ASPNR 2015…
Make your plans early to attend the ASNR 53rd Annual Meeting & The Foundation of the ASNR
Symposium 2015 at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Chicago, Illinois, April 25-30, 2015.
The ASPNR programming will include four “categorical sessions” and one “Interesting Case Session”.
With the great support of Laurie Loevner we were able to focus all topics around patient-centered care.
Each session will combine the expertise of pediatric neuroradiologists with clinical experts emphasizing
and discussing the clinical relevance of our neuroimaging in patient-centered care. The first session will
give us an update on fetal imaging and how the developing brain may predict the long term outcome. The
second session will deal with the posterior fossa in which a small brain (cerebellum) may result in a large
confusion. The third session will give an update on pediatric applications of advanced neuroimaging
techniques and finally the fourth session will be a very practical session in which we discuss what one has
to know about pediatric emergencies. The ASPNR Interesting Case Session will be a “competition”
between representatives of the younger generation of pediatric neuroradiologists trying to “beat” two
previous ASPNR presidents. This should be a real fun session. Please join us, we were able to get very
well-respected and gifted teachers from Europe and the USA!!! Members interested in submitting cases
should contact me at thuisma1@jhmi.edu by November 1, 2014. Members will receive more details
by e-mail at a later date.
On October 24-26, 2014 a course entitled: Advances in Pediatric Neuroradiology will be organized in
Miami, Florida. This course is supported by the Society for Pediatric Radiology. Under the leadership of
our former President, Tina Young Poussaint we were able to attract a faculty of expert pediatric
neuroradiologists who will review and summarize everything interested radiologists, pediatric
radiologists, neuroradiologists and neuroscientists should know about pediatric neuroradiology. Please
join us!!!
2014 Derek Harwood-Nash Award Recipient…
ASPNR is pleased to announce Azad Ghassemi, M.D., from Sutter Medical Group in Davis California,
as the winner of the 2014g Derek Harwood-Nash Award. His presentation at the ASNR 52nd Annual
Meeting in Montreal, was titled, “MR Guided LASER Ablation of Non-Lesional Epileptic Foci in
Pediatric Patients Utilizing Magnetoencephalography (MEG) Scan and EEG.”
Pediatric Neuroradiology Fellowship Training Sites…
These sites are available on our website (www.aspnr.org). We encourage additional sites to identify
themselves, so they can be listed. Contact Kristine Kulpaka at the Headquarters Office, if you wish
to be listed (kkulpaka@asnr.org). Sites listed should advise Kristine on a timely basis, if there's any
change in their status, or if they wish to update or withdraw their listing.
Thanks to all of you for your continued support and participation in ASPNR.
Sincerely,
Thierry A.G.M. Huisman, M.D.
President and Executive Committee Chair
