Indian chemical and petrochemical industry put together currently stands at US$ 144 billion and is estimated to cross the US$ 200 billion by 2020. Plastics: Plastics consumption is likely to reach 200,000 tons by 2020. The country is poised become the 3rd largest consumer of polymers in the world, after US and China. The growth in Automotive, Construction, Electronics, Healthcare, Housing & Construction, Textiles and FMCG is driving growth in plastics, thanks to investment in new technologies. Plastics consumption in India is growing at over 16 per cent a year currently, and India has more than 50,000 manufacturing units employing more than 40 lakh people in the sector. Packaging: Packaging in India is growing at an annual growth rate of 12 per cent and the country is set to become the 4th largest global market by 2016. The Indian food processing market is one of the largest in the world in terms of production, consumption and growth prospects. Demand for F&B packaging stands at around US$ 13.2 billion and is expected grow at 10 per cent a year. Demand is also growing in flexible, rigid and metallic food packaging that account for around 55 per cent of the food packaging materials market as well as in printed cartons and rigid packaging. Government initiatives on FDI in multi-brand retail are a further catalyst for growth, specifically for packaging machinery and equipment businesses. Printing: India is set to become the 5th largest market by 2018 with rising demands from other countries. Great growth opportunities for print products are clustered around revenues from print packaging and print publishing. The market size of the package-printing sector is expected to make up 43 per cent of total print product sales in 2017. There are 60,000 to 75,000 printing units in India. From the current turnover of US$ 11 billion, it is expected to clock US$ 20 billion by 2020. The address of the Honorable Governor of Gujarat highlights the fact that petrochemical products permeate the entire spectrum of daily use items and over almost every sphere of life. The plastic industry too has been making significant contribution to the economic development in the country through various sectors. The plastics and petrochemicals not only contribute significantly to the national exchequer by way of taxes and duties, but petroleum products constitute almost 20 per cent of India’s exports. However, it is pointed out that there is one sector which leaves much to be desired i.e. plastic usage in agriculture. The penetration is a mere 2 per cent against the global average of 8 per cent. He concludes, P4 Expo India 2016 is being held at an important crucial time for our economy in conformity with the MAKE IN INDIA – Program of our Honourable Prime Minister. I congratulate All India Plastic Industries Association and M/s VERIFAIR for organizing this international Expo. With the support of Gujarat State Plastic Manufacturers Association (GSPMA) and other important State Associations and with a high level of international participation, I am sure, it will help the industry here in India to grow, prosper and excel.
