STUDY SKILLS COURSE EXPECTATIONS

COURSE SCOPE: This one semester course is designed to assist in developing study skills and
strategies, to reinforce positive attitudes toward life long learning, and to help students grow personally as
individuals. Technological resources including the Internet, computer programs, and video presentations
are used in each unit of instruction. This course will fulfill one-half elective credit.
Academic performance objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able
to:
1. Understand their basic learning style(s) and apply them absorb school work. .
2. Develop an understanding basic study skills and strategies.
3. Become familiar with methods of planning and time management.
4. Have new experiences and gain insights so as to strengthen and stimulate human growth and
success in the world of learning.
Technology performance objectives:
A. Use technology; including computer software and Internet to collect data, investigate trends, issues
and institutions
B. Represent, analyze, and interpret real-world problems using tools such as spreadsheets and
databases.
COURSE OUTLINE: This course consists of lectures, worksheet study, computer and internet
generated activities, individual and group projects, and guest speakers.
GRADING POLICY:
A. Grading Method: All assignments, tests, quizzes, worksheets, etc., are for grades, and all count
towards the final student grade. Specifically:
1. Exams count 50% of each quarter grade.
2. Quarter projects, group work, and notebook checks counts as 10% of each quarter grade
(total 30%)
3. Daily work consists of assigned classwork and classroom participation. Each counts as 10%
of the quarter grade. (total 20%)
4. Each Quarter grade counts as 45% of the semester grade.
5. Semester exams count the remaining 10% of the semester grade.

80 - 89 % Work above average, very good.
70 - 79 % Average work.

59 % and below Failing work, no credit given.
C. Exams: There will be bi-weekly quizzes or projects due during each quarter, and a semester
exam at the end of the semester. Grades will be posted each week on Parentlink.
D. Assignments: There will be daily reading or other in class assignments. If not completed in class,
these assignments will become homework due at the beginning of the next class meeting. There
will be a project assigned each quarter.
E. Make-up: All assignments and exams missed due to student absences must be made up for
credit. Students have a period of up to three (3) days after return to request assignments and get
due dates. Make-up work completed and turned in during the allotted time will be given full
credit. Assignments turned in after due dates will have “late points” deducted depending on the
number of days late.
BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS
A. Rules of the road:
1. Be Respectful toward other students and the teacher
2. Do bring any and all necessary materials to class every day.
These include book, paper, pencil, and assignment(s).
3.
No eating, drinking, or chewing allowed at any time in the classroom.
4.
Keep hands, feet, and objects to oneself.
B. Consequences:
1. For tardies, A-TECH policy will be followed, i.e.
a. First tardy of the semester, Student warned.
b. Second tardy of the semester, Parent/guardian notified.
c. Third tardy of the semester, Lunch Detention RPC.
d. Fourth and subsequent tardies of the semester, RPC.
2. Minor infractions, such as classroom behavior unbecoming a high school student, verbal
warning and/or call home.
3.
Major infractions, such as fighting or persistent minor stuff, referral to Student Services.
C. Citizenship: When determining your citizenship grade I will consider your willingness to
participate and follow instructions, your self-discipline, tardies, and manners.
COMMITMENT:
Good attendance is expected and daily participation is a must. Do not get behind in your course work,
reading assignments, or projects. Research and library skills are also important parts of this course.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT:
Parents are encouraged to talk with their student about class activities and check notebooks for
completion of assignments.
