Peer Mentor Program Information and Application for 2015-2016 Academic Year (Keep This Page, Do Not Submit) Peer Mentors are upper-class undergraduate students who assist new undergraduate students in their academic transition into college. The mentoring process provides first-year students with the information, support, and encouragement they need to be successful at Stevens. The goal of the Peer Mentor Program is to provide an opportunity for new first-year students to connect with mentors who are knowledgeable about Stevens. BENEFITS OF BEING A PEER MENTOR Assist new students in making a healthy transition to Stevens Develop improved communication and crisis intervention skills, and gain an increased awareness of diversity Gain experience for future student leadership and professional opportunities Early move-in for those who live on campus. RESPONSIBILITIES OF A PEER MENTOR Mentor a small group of students (your “mentees”) during the academic year, most or all of whom will have the same faculty advisor & have the same major as you Must attend Peer Mentor Training, tentatively scheduled for Thursday, August 27 from 9am – 5pm. Must attend 1st meeting with mentees “Meet Your Peer Mentor” event scheduled for Thursday, August 27 at 7:00pm (part of Freshmen Orientation) Contact your mentees at the start of the Fall semester and periodically throughout the academic year, acting as a reliable resource and referral agent and providing relevant information Attend all planned activities as scheduled Plan activities with mentees Contact your mentees at the start of the Spring semester QUALIFICATIONS OF A PEER MENTOR Knowledgeable about the Stevens community Personable, flexible, and considerate of the needs of new students Have at least a 2.5 GPA Cannot be on Coop during the fall semester Please complete your application & submit in the drop-box outside EAS-119. All applicants must sign up for a 20 minute interview time slot when you drop off the application. Interviews begin Monday, March 30.
