International Student Mentor
Volunteer Application: Summer/Fall 2012
The International Student Mentors will be assigned a group of 10-15 new incoming
students from overseas! Mentors will be the primary point person to provide the personal
attention and guidance required for a new international student to successfully transition to
the UR and to US life. Your commitment time will vary. In the spring semester you will
attend a training session. During the summer you will answer questions and posting on FB.
At the end of the summer you will be expected to return early, as training begins on (Aug
20th.)
You will be expected to assist with international student move in and activities
throughout orientation week. Once classes begin and through the first two months of the
semester you will continue your connection with the mentees and the progress of your
mentees by keeping in touch, utilizing postings on FB, leading a group activity once a week
and checking in with the program director. If you are chosen for this important leadership
position you will be expected to:
Complete training:

Cross Cultural Mentor Training I, in Spring semester

Student Orientation Volunteer Training, August 20st

Cross Cultural Mentor Training II, August 21st
Responsibilities:

Answer email questions during the summer (your picture and bio will be posted
online)

Contact assigned mentees 1-2 times a week during the semester with events,
activities and encouragement

Submit status reports to Program Director

Design social activities including end of transition program wrap up party

Act as a general orientation volunteer for activities mandated by the orientation
committee
Attend with Mentees:

International student move in day, August 22nd

Evening activities on August 22nd (dinner and fun activity)

Aug. 23rd Expo and shopping trip
 Attend or create one social activity per week when school begins to attend as a group
(meet for lunch, attend an event, etc.)
