Purpose of the New Role

The Boots Science Building, University Park Campus

Senior Technician

To provide technical support for the staff and students working within the Boots Science

Building, with specific duties within the Drug Delivery and Tissue Engineering division.

Main Responsibilities % time per year

1. To provide a technical service to all the staff and students within the building.

This will include the safe delivery of solvents, gas cylinders and liquid nitrogen on a daily basis to ensure research work can continue.

2. Monitoring of the laboratories in accordance with Health and Safety regulations and local rules, always working to Good Laboratory Practice and ensuring a safe working environment. Reporting laboratory maintenance issues to estates via the WR system. Responsible for carrying out monthly laboratory safety checks and reporting any faults. To ensure that all chemicals, solvents and associated waste are segregated, stored and logged correctly. Organisation of the disposal of all waste generated by the Boots Science Building via an external company following the correct method in line with School and

University guidelines. Carry out annual checks on electrical equipment and ladders in compliance with statutory health and safety regulations.

3. Carry out laboratory inductions for new staff and students within the first few days of their start to ensure they are informed of all safety procedures and systems in the building and providing new starters with a handbook. Provide laboratory inductions to final year undergraduate project students. Train postgraduate students on all the basic routinely used equipment within the group, such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Gel Permeation

Chromatography, vacuum maintenance, UV and Partical Sizing equipment ensuring correct training records are kept.

4. Within the research group work closely with postgraduate students to ensure all the laboratories are working to Good Laboratory Practice and ensuring all equipment has an up to date Standard Operating Procedure and Risk

Assessment. Collation of the groups Standard Operating Procedure and Risk

Assessment ensuring they are kept in a central place and available to the group. Sourcing of new equipment and obtain quotes when requested.

Approving orders on SciQuest for safety information. Ensure the general equipment and instrumentation within the group and the building is routinely

maintained and calibrated with appropriate records being kept. Dealing with more substantial breakdown with the organisation of external engineers.

5. Assist the member of staff within the research Consumable Store at busy times. Act as back up to cover absences in the consumable store. Assist colleagues with the transportation of goods to other Pharmacy locations when needed.

6. General cover for absent colleagues and any other duties appropriate to the role.

 Two A-levels or equivalent, in relevant subjects, one must be in Chemistry

 Understanding of Health and Safety regulations and procedures

 Good communication skills both written and verbal

 Ability to organise and plan own work.

 IT literate

 Able to work under pressure to tight

First Aider

Working with liquid nitrogen

Handling gas cylinders

Experience deadlines.

 Must be flexible.

 Able to work independently or as part as a team.

 Ability to complete sometimes heavy manual handling duties

 Clean Driving licence

 Previous work experience in a similar technical role.

Experience with the following equipment.

 HPLC

 GPC

 Particle sizing techniques

 Vacuum pump maintenance

 Chemical waste

Decision Making i) taken independently by the role holder

Day to day routine work.

Prioritise own work schedule and work to deadlines set by line manager. ii) taken in collaboration with others

Liaise with line manager and academic staff within the group for any changes to the laboratories or any safety problems. iii) referred to the appropriate line manager (the academic in charge of the class) by the role holder

Additional Information

This technical post is to support the research work within the Boots Science Building with specific duties within the Drug Delivery and Tissue Engineering research group. To include routine maintenance of equipment and assist with the running of the research consumable stores and to cover staff holidays. Technical roles are essential to the School and the routine duties undertaken by these staff underpin the effective functioning of the School, without them we would not be able to provide a first rate learning environment for our undergraduate and postgraduate students, nor to undertake cutting-edge research.
