South African National Parks SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL PARKS VACANCY: SCIENTIST (MARINE CONSERVATION PLANNER) PORT ELIZABETH Paterson Grading D3 Closing date: 10 October 2015 A challenging position of Scientist (Marine conservation planner) exists within the Department of Conservation Services: Park Planning and Development at the PE Offices. Supporting the planning and implementation of new MPAs, through conducting baseline research, surveys and establishing and maintaining monitoring programmes will be the main focus. Key Performance Areas: Tasks will involve the following activities: Conducting and facilitating baseline research to support conservation planning of new MPAs. Designing and implementing monitoring programs to determine the impact and effectiveness of new MPAs Interacting and communicating with stakeholders Translating science into advice for management and for the understanding of stakeholders Publishing findings in scientific journals and popular media. Participating in EIAs related to developments both within parks and areas bordering parks. Liaising with non-SANParks scientists to facilitate research in parks Representing SANParks at meetings, committees and workshops. Support to the Coordinator: Marine Planning Requirements: The successful incumbent should have: M.Sc. or a Ph.D. degree Relevant experience (minimum of three years) preferably in Fisheries research and marine ecology or conservation planning Demonstrated ability to publish in scientific journals. Good working knowledge of the MS Office software package and relevant statistical packages. Ability to travel widely and work alone in the field, as well as in a team when required. Ability to go to sea, and being a CLASS IV diver will be a strong recommendation. Good communication skills and an ability to articulate the findings of research to those without a scientific background.
