ARTICLE 1: NAME, PURPOSE AND AFFILIATION
Section 1. The name of this organization shall be Tufts Undergraduate Research Magazine (Breakthrough).
Section 2. Breakthrough Magazine is a publication that focuses on topics in the physical and natural sciences. Articles highlight on-campus research and science news as well as global science issues. The mission of the organization is to heighten science awareness throughout the Tufts community and make science accessible to community members of all academic backgrounds.
ARTICLE 2: MEMBERSHIP
Section 1. Membership Requirements
a. Any undergraduate student who regularly attends meetings and contributes in some way to the publication (through writing, editing, photography, idea submissions, art, layout, planning, etc.)
Section 2. Students wishing to hold a position can run for an officer title during elections (held in February or March)
Section 3. The Tufts Undergraduate Research Magazine does not discriminate based upon race, religion, gender, nationality, handicap, sexual orientation, age, species, etc.
ARTICLE 3: OFFICERS
Section 1. Officer positions and duties:
Content Team:
Chief Content Editor:
Responsible for timeliness of writing and editing process
Once all articles are in, this person coordinates sending articles to 2 different editors (and back to the writer to make corrections in between)
Involves checking the email account often during editing time to keep articles moving
Makes sure associate editors and writers keep up with writing/editing deadlines
Manages special meetings and workshops for editing and writing teams
Lead Copy Editor:
Performs final edits for print edition of magazine
Coordinates planning special meetings and workshops with Chief Content editor
Responsible for citation formatting and writing integrity of the submissions (factual, relevant, current)
Creative Team:
Chief Creative Editor:
Responsible for the visual aesthetic of the magazine
Responsible for the timeliness of the final layout for publishing
Organizes creative workshops for design aesthetic and layout tools
Layout Director:
Organizes layout and people who want to do layout
Involves teaching others how to layout so you can have some help
Business Team:
Chief Managing Editor:
Take notes at meetings
Involves making sure all other management team members are doing their jobs
Follows up with emails, organizes general meetings/events, communicates with publisher
Serve as primary signatory(s) for TCU funding and budgeting
Manages e-list and room reservations
Treasurer:
Requires that you go to treasury meetings and works with Chief Editors on budget/knowing how much we can spend on various things
Reimburse people who buy things for the group
Actually deal with paying publication company / establishing a payment structure for the batch of
Historian: magazines per semester
Responsible for the history of Breakthrough
Manage institutional memory and archives (meeting notes, etc)
Keep track of distribution, media coverage of the publication
Public Relations Chair:
Deals with organizing events and demonstrations (such as cannon painting or distribution)
Manages facebook/twitter accounts
Is responsible for flyers and flyer distribution
Recruits new members via class announcements, activities fair, Facebook posts, etc.
Web Master:
Responsible for everything blog-related
Makes sure that the blog stays up and running
Edits content that will be on the blog
Keeps website up-to-date with most recent magazines and pictures, keeping it generally wellmaintained
Section 2. It is suggested that officers have at least one semester experience working for the magazine.
Section 3. All positions will be year-long commitments. If one is going abroad for a semester, he or she may only hold an Editorial Board position if he/she is sharing responsibilities with a co-officer.
ARTICLE 4: ELECTION AND IMPEACHMENT
Section 1. Elections shall be held in April at a regular meeting time. Students wishing to run for a position may nominate themselves at this time and speak on their own behalf before confidential ballots are filled out.
Section 2. If it is found that an officer can no longer fulfill his or her duties or has violated the objectives of the organization, group members can move to impeach him or her by a 2/3 vote.
ARTICLE 5: MEETINGS
Section 1. Weekly general meetings shall be held.
Section 2. Editorial Board meetings may be held at the Chief Editors’ discretion and may proceed only if at least two-thirds of the officers are present.
Section 3. Attendance will be taken at all meetings. Members must attend a majority of the semester’s general meetings, unless there is a major meeting time conflict.
Section 4. General meetings should proceed regardless of the number of members present, but should not be scheduled unless it is certain that at least three-fourths of the members can attend. A vote only requires two-thirds of the officers to be present.
Section 5. For magazine production decisions, a majority vote of all members is favorable. A majority vote within the Editorial Board is necessary for contentious decisions. It is up to the discretion of the Chief Editors a vote is necessary.
Section 6. Editorial Board and general meetings will be facilitated by the Chief Editors. If a parliamentary procedure is necessary, the Editor will defer to Robert’s Rules of Order.
ARTICLE 6: AMENDMENTS AND BY-LAWS
Section 1. Any member may propose an amendment to the constitution.
Section 2. An amendment must be presented verbally at a group meeting.
Section 3. A 2/3 vote is necessary for ratification of an amendment, as well as ratification by the TCU
Judiciary.
Section 4. If necessary, group by-laws may be written or altered to clarify any part of the constitution or to define details of the organization not found in this constitution.
Section 5. Ratification of by-laws shall be treated in the same manner as ratification of amendments.
ARTICLE 7: ADHERENCE TO COLLEGE POLICIES
Section 1. Tufts Undergraduate Research Magazine will adhere to college rules, regulations and policies.
Section 2. Tufts Undergraduate Research Magazine will adhere to all local, state and federal laws.
