Instructional Task

After reading documents which deal with both body image and gender roles it is time to put it all together!

Let’s go back the Mary Wollstonecraft quote we started with.

"Taught from infancy that beauty is a woman's scepter, the mind shapes itself to the body, and roaming around its gilt cage, only seeks to adorn its prison."

The quote by Mary Wollstonecraft tells us that women are taught from birth that beauty is their power. It becomes so ingrained in their being, that the focus on attaining and maintaining beauty becomes a prison. In turn this does not allow women to be free to be their true selves.

Even though Mary Wollstonecraft lived in the 18 th

Century, her quote brings up issues still prevalent in our society today. Over the past few weeks we have been reading, analyzing, and discussing documents dealing with body image and gender roles. Using the documents and the work completed for the documents, respond to the following:

In a fully developed essay, discuss how the various documents support Mary Wollstonecraft’s point of view expressed in the quote. You need to reference a minimum of four documents. Be sure to include details from the text to support your answer.

In your essay, be sure to include:

an overview and analysis of Mary Wollstonecraft’s quote.

 details from at least four different documents to show how Wollstonecraft’s quote can still be applied to today’s society.

 inferences based on information in the articles as to what is the primary influence on how women perceive themselves.

 your own point of view on how this issue should be addressed. Do NOT use first person!

Make sure you check your writing for correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
