Summer Project
Part 1 (Number Sense)
Weather Variations Across the Globe
1. Students will identify the weather variations in the Morning and Evening for a period of 7-days. Students may use a
combination of a cell phone or computer at home to obtain this information. Please include the dates for which the
weather was taken. Use a number of weather sites to obtain the temperature in the am/pm. Try to stick to a set time
each day(within an hour) to keep things accurate.

3. Answer the following questions based on the total temperature change for each location.
a.
Which country location had the greatest increase in temperature over one week?
b. Which country had the greatest decrease in temperature?
4. Create a line chart for the three countries and there change in temperature over a 7-day period.
Part two: From here to Infinity(Scientific Notation)
Student will use internet search engines to find the distance from the earth to the seven other planets in our solar
system Depending on the information given, students will either put the numbers into scientific notation or into
standard form. Please see the examples below an example of what to do.
The purpose of scientific notation is to compress extremely large numbers.
Scientific Notation
3,525,000,000,000,000 = 3.525 x 10
15
--.> Start by placing the decimal between the 3 and 2, leaving a
single digit out front.
 Cut off zeros after the last non zero number.

Count the powers of 10 to the decimal, which in this case is 15
**If the number starts as a whole number, the exponent is positive. If the number starts as a negative, the
exponent is negative.
Standard form:
12
6.3502 x 10 = 6,350,200,000,000
From the decimal place move 12 times to the right, adding eight
zeros to the number.
Write in Standard form or in Scientific Notation

Part Three Probability using dice (need two die to complete this activity)
The following activity requires students to create a hypothesis based on the total number of outcomes that can be rolled
for the sum of each roll. Students then test their hypothesis by rolling 100 times. Lastly, students will report their
findings
1. a. Write out all the outcomes for each sum of the dice.
b. Create a hypothesis (educated guess) based on the total outcomes for the sum of the dice

Part Four: Geometry Floor plan
Create a floor plan for your one story house. The requirements are as follows:
1.
Create a scale based on the fact that the graph is not larger than 8.5 inches by 11 inches.
2. The total area of the floor plan is 2500 squared feet.
3. The floor plan must have:
a. 3 bedroom
b. 2 bathrooms
c. 1-kitchen
d. 1-living room
e. 1-family room or den
f. **Use graph paper to complete floor plan
g. scale
