Fifth grade: IL.19.C.2a Knowledge
of rules, safety and strategies.
Invented: 1891, by James Naismith, in Springfield, Massachusetts
Object of the game: to throw the soccer ball, into the fruit baskets
nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. Every time a point was
scored, the game was halted so the janitor could bring out a ladder
and retrieve the ball. Later, the bottoms of the fruit baskets were
removed.

Basketball Team: a team has five players: guards, forwards, center.
Scoring
1 point = any completed free throw; 2 points = any good shot made inside the 3 point line;
3 points = any good shot made outside 3 point line

Front Court
The term front court is used to denote the
offensive end of the court from the midcourt
line to the baseline.
Back Court
Back Court is used to denote the area behind
the mid court line. It includes the half of the
court from the midcourt line back to the
baseline/end line. Once the ball is advanced
across the midcourt line into the front court, it
cannot go back

Violations
-a violation is when a rule of the game is broken. The ball is awarded to the other team,
this is called a turnover.
1. Traveling: running/stepping without dribbling the basketball.
2. Double dribble: dribbling the ball with two hands at the same time, or dribbling the ball
again after you have stopped dribbling.
3. Out of Bounds: when the ball or a player goes beyond the boundary line (sideline or
baseline).
4. Three Seconds in the Key: when an offensive player remains in the key (paint) for more
than three seconds.
5. Over and Back: crossing the midcourt line and then crossing back into the backcourt.
Fouls - any time a player contacts another player to gain an advantage.
No slapping, holding, hitting, charging.
Shooting Foul: occurs when an offensive player is fouled as he/she is shooting the basketball.

Dribbling: the act of bouncing the basketball continuously.
Passing: the act of getting the basketball to another player.
Shooting: throwing the ball towards the basket.
