SUMMARY
This work placement is an interesting opportunity to work within the Academic Team and to gain insight into
teaching English as a foreign language. With the main focus being on classroom assistance for our Young
Learners (aged 5-11) and providing operational support in the running of our Junior Vacation Programme
(Teenage students aged 12-17), this placement also offers a variety of administrative and operational duties in
a multi-national school working with people from all over the world. It is an exciting opportunity where every
day will have a different challenge.
Core Duties & Responsibilities
Classroom assistance in our Young Learner classes:
>> Prepare the classrooms for lessons. This may involve a variety of activities such as photocopying
worksheets, setting up craft equipment, preparing computers, rearranging the furniture for a
particular activity and so on.
>> Keep the classrooms in good order to ensure an optimal teaching and learning environment.
>> Look after Young Learner Resources (books, paper, arts & crafts supplies, games), ensuring there is
sufficient stock in all class room and all material is in good working order.
>> Create displays of pupils’ work, or other class- related artwork.
>> Accompany students on class trips during lessons outside of the classroom.
>> Liaise with students who have difficulties understanding their lessons and help them to overcome any
social or cultural division.
>> Supervise children who need to leave the classroom.
>> On occasion assist the teacher with curriculum planning.
>> Act as an emergency cover teacher depending on experience and willingness.
>> Supervise young learners during their breaks, ensuring children do not enter restricted areas and do
not cause disturbances on the premises.
Operational support for our Junior Vacation Programme
>> Provide students access to their classrooms when the Junior Vacation Programme operates from
premises provided by the University of Brighton.
>> Provide support to other BLC staff members during break times.
>> Check student attendance and communicate any absences to the Academic Manager / Registrar.
>> Follow up any student absences with homestay providers and group leaders.
>> Provide administrative support to the Academic team as and when required.
>> Ensure all classrooms are left in good order at the end of the day to ensure an optimal teaching and
learning environment.
>> Direct students to their classrooms, advise them of room changes, and liaise between the students
and the Academic Management team if there are any queries.
>> Communicate any level requests made by students to the Academic Manager.
Other administrative and operational duties:
>> Assist with testing of all new students, with particular focus on Young Learners (usually on a Monday),
i.e supervising them during the test & marking their results.
>> Class registers: daily checking and inputting of students attendance, notifying the Academic Manager
or Registrar of any irregularities, producing weekly registers on a Friday.
>> File away student level tests and registers.
>> Assist the Academic department with any other duties that may occasionally be required.
>> Assist with the preparation of student reports and certificates at the end of each week.
>> Inputting information on LCMS student management system
>> Other interdepartmental duties as may be allocated in line with the needs of the business.

UK resident or EU citizen only
Fluent English both written and spoken
Knowledge of at least one other foreign language would be desirable
Background in education is beneficial but not essential
must feel passionate about working with young children and in a multicultural environment
Excellent communication & interpersonal skills
Good computer skills with Excel, Word etc
Polite & friendly
Highly organised
Team player
Hardworking
Interested in foreign cultures
Good sense of humour
Must have a flexible attitude and show willingness to undertake delegated tasks
Work Placement Duration
1 vacancy from March 2016 (applicants must be available for a minimum of two months)
3 vacancies from June to September (applicants must be available between 6 June 16 and 19 August 16)
Working Hours
>> 38.75 hours per week, flexible shifts from Monday to Friday between 8:30 and 18:00. Hours may be
reduced on quieter days.

This work placement is unpaid.
BLC can help arrange homestay accommodation on B&B or half board basis at a reduced rate.
Travel pass included.
References will be provided at the end of the internship period.
This position entails working with children, therefore DSB disclosure may be required.
