Dear Parents/Guardians of a Graduation Senior:
We would like to congratulate your son/daughter for their achievements towards meeting the
graduation requirements for the class of 2015.
This communication is to provide information regarding the Los Angeles Unified School District’s policy
on the purchase or rental of cap and gowns for commencement or graduation activities.


The California Supreme Court has found that the high school graduation ceremony is an
“integral part of the educational process”.
Therefore, the graduation ceremony is an educational activity per the California Education
Code Section 49010(a), as to which a student cannot be charged.
The use of caps and gowns are part of academic dress during the graduation ceremony. Many parents
or students may choose to purchase or rent the cap and gown as a keepsake. We would like to assure
you that it is not mandatory for you to purchase or pay for a rental of cap and gowns for
commencement activities. If you choose “Not to Purchase” a cap and gown, the District will loan your
son/daughter a cap and gown for use during the commencement activity free of charge.
