Separating Mixtures: Environmentally Conscious Waste Disposal Today’s society is becoming ever more environmentally friendly and eco-conscious. In an effort to help with the large task of making our world a greener place to live, you are charged with the task of creating a poster to make the people of Ontario more aware of what can be done to reduce the number of items they throw in the garbage. Your goal is to create a poster that will inform people of the different ways in which they can divert waste from their garbages and our landfills. Your poster MUST include a title, images or pictures (hand-drawn, from magazines/newspapers, or off the internet), and text describing each of the green alternatives to using the garbage. The green alternatives you should mention include: recycling, composting, proper disposal of hazardous materials (i.e. paint, batteries, electronics, CFLs), collection programs from reusable items (i.e. used clothing collection and bottle returns), and the anti-plastic bag movement *Your poster should include at least a paragraph (5-6 sentences) about each green alternative Two useful websites you might want to use to begin your search include: 1) www.ene.gov.on.ca/en/land/wastedisposal/index.php 2) www.dowhatyoucan.ca *Somewhere on your poster (perhaps the bottom right or left corner) you MUST include a list of all sources (i.e. website addresses) that you used to research. DO NOT plagiarize – this means copying and pasting the words of someone else directly onto your page. You can use someone else’s ideas, but put them in your own words, and be sure to cite the source where you found the ideas Rubric: Knowledge & Understanding Understands material (i.e. research speaks to suggested green alternatives to traditional waste disposal and serves to make the public more aware of these options Thinking & Inquiry Evidence of planning Application Makes connections between science, technology, society and the environment (i.e. assesses and researches more environmentally friendly options available for the disposal and separation of mixtures and solutions) Communication Words and images - Correctly spells, punctuates and capitalizes Level 4 Insightful understanding of material in evidence Level 3 Competent understanding of material in evidence Level 2 Adequate understanding of material in evidence Level 1 Incomplete understanding of material in evidence Choice and layout of images and text reveal thoughtful planning of poster Organization is clear and done in a logical manner Awkward, cluttered and difficult to understand poster Makes connections between, science, technology, society and the environment with a high degree of effectiveness Makes connections between science, technology, and the environment with considerable effectiveness Some flaws in organization of images and text – information is organized in a somewhat unclear manner Makes connections between science, technology, society and the environment with some effectiveness Vivid, dynamic, eye-catching and related to the topic On topic, but some errors in detail Adequate – some pieces of information missing or incorrect information is displayed Written/visual content is missing or almost completely missing and/or is not at all related to the topic Good: Spelling, punctuation, capitalization Developing: Spelling, punctuation, capitalization Mastery: Spelling, punctuation, capitalization Makes connections between science, technology, society and the environment with limited effectiveness Poor: Spelling, punctuation, capitalization
