Food Web Group Project
Good news! You get to use your phones for this project! The purpose of this project is to get you to do some quick
research of plants and animals in different biomes and construct a food web. Your group will be required to create 2
food webs with 2 biomes (there are 6 biomes represented, so you don’t have to do 2). During each of the first two days
of this project, your group is to do 1 food web. Use your phones to research what the different animals eat. Then you
want to set up the food web and draw arrows showing the flow of energy as the animals eat their food. The goal of this
is to create a food web, where there are many interweaving feeding relationships. After you are finished creating your
food web and drawing the arrows (either on whiteboards with white board markers or on the lab tables with chalk), take
a picture of it so you can turn it in once you are done with the project. Once you are done with the food web answer the
questions on this worksheet, then shuffle up the cards with the organisms and erase the lines you have drawn so the
next group can start. Note: please list the common names, not scientific names of organisms.

List your producers (at least 4):
List your primary consumers (at least 4):
List your secondary consumers (at least 3):
List your tertiary consumers (at least 1):
Do you have any quaternary consumers? If so, write the name of it (them):
List at least 2 animals that are more than 1 type of consumer (such as primary and tertiary) and write out the food chain
that shows how they are both.

Summary questions:
1. Out of the 2 food webs you made, which one had the most tertiary and quaternary consumers? How many of each
were there? Can you explain this high number (does it have something to do with the climate or something else)?
2. Out of the 2 food webs you made, which one had the least tertiary and quaternary consumers? How many of each
were there? Can you explain this number?
3. Pick any of your biome examples of animals that are more than one type of consumer. Rewrite the 2 food chains that
show how they are both.

Next, analyze each of these food chains and explain which is the most efficient feeding relationship. (Hint: this has to do
with the 10% rule and how the food gets to the consumer.)
4. What did you learn from this activity? What did you like about this activity? Write at least 2 well-written sentences.

Picture page! Either cut out and paste your pictures onto this page or go onto my website, download this page and
paste your pictures onto this digitally (preferred method ) . If you do this digitally, just email it to me, making sure that
you put your group member’s names up top and the name of each biome about the picture. acowley@methacton.org
