October Instructional Pacing (Parent Calendar) for First Grade

Aloud
We will be reading nonfiction stories about
community helpers and practice sequence story
events and organizing information using graphic
organizers.
Reading Workshop
This week in Reader’s Workshop students will be
practicing how to help our partners when they get
stuck. We will also practice how to retell our stories
using “three fingers” to tell the beginning, middle,
and end.
We will practice taking a small moment from our life
and learn how to make it into a story.

We will be identifying shapes and making triangles
and quadrilaterals of different shapes and sizes. We
will find 2D shapes in our environment (rectangle,
trapezoid, square, circle, hexagon, and rhombus)

will practice making objects move and measure the
distance.

Aloud
We will be reading nonfiction stories about bats. We
will practice labeling, diagrams, and finding
important details.
Reading Workshop
This week in Reader’s Workshop students will be
practicing how to tackle tricky words. We will do this
by thinking about if it reminds us of another word
and looking closely to see the sounds we are saying
make sense with the story.
Writing Workshop
We will be creating and writing a nonfiction book
about bats based on all of the information we have
learned.

We will practice with 3d shapes by describing the
shapes edges, faces, and vertices. Look for 3 shapes
around your house to talk about with your child!

This week we will be learning about community
helpers and understanding their roles in the
community and school.
Interactive Read
Aloud
We will be reading fiction stories about bats. We will
practice retelling the beginning, middle, and end of
the story. This is something that you can also ask your
child to do at home.
Reading Workshop
This week in Reader’s Workshop students will
continue practicing how readers tackle tricky words.
Readers check themselves and ask: “Does this make
sense? Do the sounds I am saying make sense with
the letters on the page?”
Writing Workshop
We will continue to work on creating and writing a
nonfiction book about bats using all of the
information we have learned.

Math
We will begin to practice single digit subtraction. We
will practice solving subtraction word problems using
a variety of strategies: counting with cubes, drawing
a picture, using a number line, counting up from the
number, and counting backwards in their head.

Social Studies
We experiment with magnets and their poles to
discover magnetic and nonmagnetic materials.
Interactive Read
Aloud
We will be reading “creepy crawly” books and
practicing finding key ideas and details in the text.
Reading Workshop
We will focus on the characters in our story. We will
think about the “stars” in our books. We will get to
know the characters by thinking about how they
change in the story.
Writing Workshop
We will be practicing how to add adjectives and
details to our writing and illustrations.
Language/Grammar
Adjectives
Math
We will practice with addition and subtraction word
problems. The students will need to know what
operation to use when solving a word problem.
Some clue words for addition are (sum, in all,

altogether). Some clue words for subtraction are
(many more, gave away, left over).
Science
We are going to be examining pumpkins this week
and use make observations like a scientist. We will
be conducting experiments to see if a pumpkin sinks
or floats. We will measure the height and width of a
pumpkin. The students will be making predictions
about how many lines and inside of a pumpkin.
