Class title: Back of the Legs
Course and Hours: Swedish 3.5
Stretching Guidelines
Overall warm up with emphasis on the back of the legs (e.g. hamstring, calf, and
quadriceps stretches, any relevant yoga movements).
Intro of Topic and Q & A Guidelines
Use the power point presentation to identify the anatomy specific to this class.
(gluteals, hamstrings, gastrocnemius, soleus, vastus lateralis, adductors
calcaneous, iliac crest, greater trochanter, IT Band). Students have already been
shown posterior anatomy, so this needn't take long.
Introduce the benefits of working this area, while acknowledging the sensitive
nature of this area to most people. Discuss different ways to build trust and
confidence between the client and the therapist (see draping guidelines, identify
specific anatomy & boney landmarks). Define the upper thigh/adductor area –
approx. the upper1/3 to ½ of the medial thigh - as an area not to be specifically
worked, due to privacy/modesty concerns.
Demo Guidelines
It is important that the gluteal draping be taught in an accurate and confident
manner. Please refer to the draping guidelines included in the packet and power
point. This draping is not optional. However, we will now be including demo of how
to modify draping and massage when the receiver has underwear on. Discuss
muscles to be covered by the massage strokes. Define the adductor/upper thigh
area not to be worked in the Swedish routine. Assistant or student will call out the
written routine for the demo.
Practical Guidelines
Ensure all students are draping the gluteal area properly - top of the drape over the
iliac crest and enough of gluteal is exposed to work the sacral border and iliac crest
origins thoroughly - unless underwear alternative is used. Even in this case (unles
boxers are involved) the giver can go through the steps of practicing draping for an
unclothed client.
Use correct body mechanics.
Applying the strokes correctly (thoroughly work origin to insertion, wherever
possible, and covering the entire muscle belly, where appropriate).

Discussion Guidelines
Encourage student pairs to give appropriate feedback regarding the sense of
connection, the pressure of the techniques, the flow of the routine, and the
effectiveness and coverage of gluteal/leg draping.
