RE:
Senate Action S-14/15-15
Resolution on Faculty Parking
At the December 10, 2014 meeting of the Academic Senate, the following Resolution on the Faculty
Parking was approved by a vote of 4-2 with 4 abstentions.
WHEREAS Saint Mary's College is located outside any urban setting, and its setting and
location do not provide multiple sources of public transportation for all faculty or provide
widespread carpooling options;
WHEREAS even the single bus service from the nearest BART station is infrequent and
covers only limited hours;
WHEREAS under circumstances that prevent practical, widespread use of public
transportation and car pooling, and where most faculty must drive, it is the obligation of the
employer to provide parking for employees;
WHEREAS faculty salaries have consistently remained low in comparison to salary
obligations publicly and repeatedly assumed by the College;
WHEREAS educational effectiveness and faculty contracts require faculty to have timely
and convenient access to parking for a variety of academic purposes including teaching,
scholarship, and service;
WHEREAS faculty are contractually obligated to be on campus at multiple different times
of the day and days of the week in order to fulfill the College's and their own obligations to
students in the areas of teaching, scholarship and service, then,
BE IT RESOLVED:
The College shall continue to provide free parking on campus for all faculty in order to
practically and reasonably facilitate responsibilities of the College and its faculty to provide
quality academic experience and fulfill obligations in teaching, service and scholarship
within a geographic setting in which viable public transportation is not available.
This action was assigned Senate Action #S-14/15-15.
