File Ref: F68752 NOTING OF DECISIONS MADE ON MONDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2015 ON ITEMS CONSIDERED BY THE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE BY WAY OF A CIRCULAR 1. PROPOSALS FOR NEW UNIVERSITY PRIZES Members noted that in accordance with the University Policy on Prizes the Curriculum Committee was responsible for the establishment, amendment or rescission of undergraduate prizes for pass or honours degree courses. The prize conditions for the following prizes had been received from the Prizes Unit and the Committee had been asked to consider and establish these prizes: 1.1. J AND D PRICE PRIZE – REF F72989 Members noted that at its meeting held on 9th September 2015, the Committee had considered proposed conditions to establish the J and D Price Prize. During its deliberations, it had been agreed that the proposed conditions had been too restrictive and might, inadvertently, exclude students enrolling mid-year or on a part-time basis. The Albany Centre had been asked to review the conditions. Attached for members’ consideration was a redrafted set of prize conditions to better align with the donors intent of awarding to a student in their second academic year, and bearing in mind the Committee’s feedback to broaden the cohort wherever possible. RESOLVED – 160/15 that the Curriculum Committee approve: (i) the establishment of the J and D Price Prize in accordance with the prize conditions as attached to the circular; (ii) the management of the J and D Price Prize by the Albany Centre; and (iii) the awarding of the J and D Price Prize for the first time in 2016 to the 2015 academic year. 1.2. AA Kingsley Memorial Honours Prize in Engineering - REF F76147 Members considered the proposed prize conditions for the AA Kingsley Memorial Honours Prize in Engineering, copies of which were attached to the circular. Members noted that in accordance with the University Policy on Prizes, the minimum value for a prize at the honours degree course level was $1,500, which would be met by a 2% or higher annual income after capitalisation on the capital sum of $75,000 provided by the donor. RESOLVED – 161/15 that the Curriculum Committee approve: (i) the establishment of the AA Kingsley Memorial Honours Prize in Engineering in accordance with the prize conditions as attached to the circular; (ii) the management of the AA Kingsley Memorial Honours Prize in Engineering by the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics; and (iii) the awarding of the AA Kingsley Memorial Honours Prize in Engineering for the first time in 2016 to the 2015 academic year. 1.3. JEAN CALLANDER ART PRIZE – REF F76402 Members considered the proposed prize conditions for the Jean Callander Art Prize, copies of which were attached to the circular. Members noted that, although the prize was funded from a capital sum of $900,000 provided by the donor, the $9,000 prize would be offered for a set period of 40 years 2015 – 2055 academic years with an increase in value of 10% every five years. Members also noted that after the fortieth award, 76 File Ref: F68752 the prize would be rescinded and the funds accumulated in the capital account would be used to endow a Chair appropriate to the development of fine arts. RESOLVED – 162/15 that the Curriculum Committee approve: (i) the establishment of the Jean Callandar Art Prize in accordance with the prize conditions as attached to the circular agenda; (ii) the management of the Jean Callandar Art Prize by the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts; (iii) the awarding of the Jean Callandar Art Prize for the first time in 2016 to the 2015 academic year; and (iv) that the prize will be rescinded after being awarded for the fortieth time (to the 2055 cohort) and the funds accumulated in the capital account will be used to endow a Chair appropriate to the development of fine arts 2. UWA CURRICULUM MANAGEMENT: SUMMARY REPORT OF UWA CURRICULUM FOR 2016 Members noted that The University of Western Australia had a curriculum in line with the world’s top universities with a focus on research, communication skills and creative and critical thinking. 77 File Ref: F68752 Members also noted that each year a comprehensive curriculum change process was undertaken that involved all faculties modifying and improving the curriculum to ensure our students receive the very best education. This process involved the development and modification of new and current courses and units and the rescindment of courses and units that were no longer needed. Members noted that Academic Policy Services provided a consolidated summary of UWA Curriculum for 2016 and that the report was available online and printing the report was optional. RESOLVED – 165/15 that the Curriculum Committee recommend to Academic Council that the ‘Summary Report of UWA Curriculum for 2016 – Cycle 1 and Cycle 2’ be approved. 78
