Welcoming and Opening Remarks – President Janet Dudley-Eshbach o Humberto Aristizabal, the new Fair Practices officer at Salisbury University was introduced at the meeting. Greg Prince, the new Vice President for Advancement and External Affairs, was also introduced to the group. o President Dudley-Eshbach reported on the performance funding model work group meetings she has been attending. The final document have been presented to the Board of Regents and forwarded to the Maryland Higher Education Commission. The purpose driving this work group was a renewed interest in PAT Meeting December 13, 2012 Page 2 performance funding as a means to appropriate funding more efficiently and effectively to accomplish state goals of improving educational outcomes, particularly in the area of degree attainment. While the initial focus for the group was based on rewarding exceptional performance when compared to performance peers, the end document shifted that focus to improvements individual institutions obtain based on their own previous performance. 2. o The President updated the Team on Delmarva Public Radio. She publicly thanked Jason Curtin for his tireless work on this issue. As the Caruthers Building is to be torn down next summer, more conversation has taken place about the future of WSCL/WSDL Radio. While there are many obstacles and possible scenarios that could take place, Delmarva Public Radio is considered a very important University and community asset and every effort is being made to retain the stations. o President Dudley-Eshbach provided an update on the Medical Education Expansion meeting. This is a collaborative group that includes University of Maryland, Baltimore Medical School; Salisbury University; University of Maryland, Eastern Shore; and Peninsula Regional Medical Center. The focus of these meetings is to consider bringing a medical school to the Eastern Shore. SU’s primary role would be to offer its current health science programs, should the medical school ever grow into a Health Sciences Center. University Governance o Student Government Association (SGA) – Katherine Mooney i. Homecoming was a success again this year, with many activities planned and great attendance. ii. Recycle Madness was also successful. The campus wide drive for recycling materials netted 2,000 tons. The proceeds were donated to Joseph House and Halo. iii. The focus for SGA next semester is to continue the Stop Hatin campaign, to foster inclusiveness on campus. iv. Katherine thanked everyone on the Team for their help this year, and reminded everyone to let them know how the SGA can help their division. o Faculty Senate – Dr. J. Craig Clarke i. In the upcoming semester, the Faculty Senate will be examining USM policies pertaining to faculty. Specifically the issue of political signage will be examined under the Fair Use document, the academic freedom policy will be reviewed, and the Sexual Harassment policy will continue to be examined. ii. Information on Fall Fusion is currently being reviewed by the Admissions and Readmission Committee, the University Academic Assessment Committee and the Long Range Academic Planning Committee. The language on the hiring of the Honors Program director has been officially changed to incorporate new search committee guidelines. o Staff Senate – Steve Blankenship i. During this semester the Staff Senate has discussed Wellness and other related issues including: Campus Ergonomics, Smoking policy (Areas, enforcement), and Shared Governance. Feedback, to and from, the Council of University System Staff show similar issues at other campuses. The Staff Senate will continue to look for ways to improve wellness with campus initiatives. ii. The Staff Senate nominated three staff members for Board of Regents awards. 3. National Survey of Student Engagement results – Kara Siegert o Kara Siegert provided the results of a positive outcome SU experienced on the National Survey of Student Engagement report recently sent to the University. i. Response rates have increased from previous years. ii. SU was rated highly in categories the categories of academic challenge, Student-Faculty interaction, and Supportive Campus Environment. 4. Enrollment Report – Kara Siegert o Kara also supplied enrollment data as follows for the fall 2012 semester: 8657 students 688 graduate students 7969 undergraduate students 1232 incoming Freshman with an average 1724 composite SAT scores (up by 13 percentage points) and an aver 3.71 GPA (up by 3.66 from the previous year). The test optional average GPA was 3.83. 5. International Education Enrollment – Aaron Basko and Brian Stiegler o Aaron Basko and Brian Stiegler presented information on their recruitment efforts to increase international student enrollment. They presented information on the economic impact that international students have to the institution. The 108 international students currently enrolled at SU have an impact of 2.8 million dollars. o International students also provide a global experience overall. Graduate Education Summit – Clifton Griffin o Clifton Griffin provided an update on the Graduate Education Summit recently held on SU’s campus. o Topics that were covered included work force development needs, assisting professionals in obtaining additional education and certification. Strategic Plan Process – Amy Hasson o Amy Hasson noted that both the previous discussions about International enrollment and graduate education were just two of the conversations that were underway which will inform the University’s next strategic plan. Discussion and input gathering will continue in the Spring and likely cover topics including diversity, academic transformation, distance learning and strategic enrollment planning. o As the current plan expires in December 2013, the next semester will be used both to assess the outgoing plan and to gather input for the next plan. A new plan will be drafted over the summer for review across campus in fall 2013. The plan will be amended as needed in November/December, with a new plan finalized and in place for January 2014.
