Eligibility: open Deadline: February 1, 2013 Website: http://www.nyfa.org/source/content/search/resultItem.aspx?PID=13737 Educational Testing Service’s 2013 Summer Internship Program in Research for Graduate Students Interns in this eight-week program participate in research under the guidance of an ETS mentor in any of these areas: educational measurement and psychometrics, validity, natural language processing and speech technologies, cognitive psychology, learning theory, linguistics and computational linguistics, teaching and classroom research, statistics, international large-scale assessments. Interns also participate in seminars and workshops on a variety of topics. Each intern is required to give a brief presentation about their project at the conclusion of the internship. Ford Scholar Award in Honor of Robert M. Teeter is an annual award of $5000 given to a doctoral student to support dissertation research and writing on an aspect of the United States political process and public policy, broadly defined. The Selection Committee will consider research in any field related to the study of the United States political process and public policy, broadly defined, during the last half of the 20th century. Of special interest is the role and analysis of public opinion in that process. Deadline: April 10, 2013 Website: http://www.fordlibrarymuseum.gov/library/fsa.asp Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) Social Media Collective for Summer 2013 Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) is looking for PhD interns to join the Social Media Collective for Summer 2013. For these positions, we are looking primarily for social science PhD students (including communication, sociology, anthropology, media studies, information studies, etc.). The Social Media Collective is a collection of scholars at MSRNE who focus on sociotechnical questions, primarily from a social science perspective. We are not an applied program; rather, we work on critical research questions that are important to the future of social science scholarship. PhD interns at MSRNE are expected to devise and execute a research project during their internships. The expected outcome of an internship at MSRNE is a publishable scholarly paper for an academic journal or conference of the intern’s choosing. MSRNE internships are 12-week paid internships in Cambridge, Massachusetts. PhD interns are expected to be on-site for the duration of their internship. Ford Presidential Museum The highly rewarding and fiercely competitive field of museum work requires more than classroom study for entry. Increasingly, employers demand a certain level of practical experience to accompany a degree in the humanities. The Padnos Museum Internship Program at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum provides the necessary skills students need to attain a certain level of marketability in the field. Beginning in the 2013-2014 academic year, the Carson Scholars Program will offer one-year, onetime-only, $5,000 graduate scholarships. The scholarships are designed to support and retain University of Arizona PhD students whose research is related to the environment and renewable energy and who are interested in communicating science to a broad audience. Faculty mentors will provide guidance, training, and opportunities to meet with communication professionals to help the scholars hone their skills in effectively explaining their (and others') research. Areas of interest include human rights, government transparency, access to information and to justice, and the promotion of civil society and social inclusion. Full-time fellows based in the United States will receive a stipend of $80,000 or $100,000, plus a project budget. This can include economic growth, poverty reduction, and equity. Dissertations that address population and development issues pertinent to the African continent are especially encouraged. The fellowship is intended for doctoral students enrolled in economics, economic demography, geography, and epidemiology, and address population and development issues in their dissertation topics. The university sets the academic standards and awards the degree. In practice, participation by the faculty member varies from full partnership in the research to general supervision of the student's thesis work. The Argonne staff sponsor undertakes to keep the faculty sponsor informed about the student's progress, and he/she attends the thesis defense. While the program provides rigorous training for its participants, it is also designed with flexibility in order to meet the particular interests of the Fellow. Fellows are carefully matched to host agencies based on the career interests of the Fellow and available opportunities of the host agency. During the program interns will be assigned to projects that utilize the skills they’ve acquired through graduate studies and personal experiences. Interns will also be able to take advantage of lecture series and other opportunities offered at the CDC. Interns will receive a $750 weekly stipend while participating in this program. The mission of the internship is to offer selected students a broad overview of environmental health at the federal level and to foster an interest in environmental health as a career. Applicants should have a passion for the environment and an eagerness to learn about the environment’s link to human health. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program provides up to 20 fellowships yearly to full-time underrepresented graduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Students are selected for fellowships that include financial support and a 10week, hands on research experience at a NASA Center or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Fellowship offers financial support for up to 3 years. Graduate fellows spend three months at PERC in Bozeman, Montana, researching and writing a paper under the supervision of a PERC senior fellow. While at PERC, fellows are required to present two workshops to outline, report on, and summarize their research findings. A paper of publishable quality is the expected result. Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $1,800 in addition to reimbursement for reasonable domestic round trip travel expenses to Montana. Population dynamics is the study of fish populations as affected by fishing mortality, growth, recruitment and natural mortality. Ph.D. candidates interested in the population dynamics of living marine resources and the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing their status can receive up to three years of funding. Ph.D. students in marine resource economics, concentrating on the conservation and management of living marine resources, can receive two years of funding. Up to 20 scholars will each receive stipends of $67,000 in the first year with an increase during the second year. The program aims to teach physicians skills in improving health-services systems, emphasizing community-based research and leadership training. Research projects should be aimed at understanding and controlling diseases (either human or animal) of relevance to local, national or global health. This can include laboratory-based molecular analysis of field or clinical samples, but projects focused solely on studies in vitro or using animal models will not normally be considered under this scheme. This fellowship is part of a series of career awards aimed at building sustainable capacity in areas of research that have the potential for increasing health benefits for people and their livestock in low- and middle-income countries.
