Association for Asian Studies (AAS) and Inner Asia Council (CIAC) Small Grants
The China and Inner Asia Council of the AAS (CIAC) is soliciting applications for awards of up to

Educational Testing Service’s 2013 Summer Internship Program in Research for Graduate
Students
Interns in this eight-week program participate in research under the guidance of an ETS mentor in
any of these areas: educational measurement and psychometrics, validity, natural language processing
and speech technologies, cognitive psychology, learning theory, linguistics and computational
linguistics, teaching and classroom research, statistics, international large-scale assessments. Interns
also participate in seminars and workshops on a variety of topics. Each intern is required to give a
brief presentation about their project at the conclusion of the internship.

Gerald P Ford Scholar Award
The Gerald R. Ford Scholar Award in Honor of Robert M. Teeter is an annual award of $5000 given
to a doctoral student to support dissertation research and writing on an aspect of the United States
political process and public policy, broadly defined. The Selection Committee will consider research
in any field related to the study of the United States political process and public policy, broadly
defined, during the last half of the 20th century. Of special interest is the role and analysis of public
opinion in that process.
Eligibility: Doctoral students in Political Science, History, Journalism, Communications, Public
Policy, Foreign Relations, or American Studies are encouraged to apply.

Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) Social Media Collective for Summer 2013
Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) is looking for PhD interns to join the Social Media
Collective for Summer 2013. For these positions, we are looking primarily for social science PhD
students (including communication, sociology, anthropology, media studies, information studies,
etc.). The Social Media Collective is a collection of scholars at MSRNE who focus on sociotechnical questions, primarily from a social science perspective. We are not an applied program;
rather, we work on critical research questions that are important to the future of social science
scholarship. PhD interns at MSRNE are expected to devise and execute a research project during
their internships. The expected outcome of an internship at MSRNE is a publishable scholarly paper
for an academic journal or conference of the intern’s choosing. MSRNE internships are 12-week
paid internships in Cambridge, Massachusetts. PhD interns are expected to be on-site for the
duration of their internship.

Mister Rogers Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students (Masters or Ph.D.) of accredited
colleges or universities. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment — through coursework or
experience — to any combination of at least two of the following fields: early childhood education,
child development/child psychology, film/television production, music, animation, production of
cross-platform entertainment. Applicant must have the ultimate goal of working in children’s media.

Padnos Museum Internship Program at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum
The highly rewarding and fiercely competitive field of museum work requires more than classroom
study for entry. Increasingly, employers demand a certain level of practical experience to accompany
a degree in the humanities. The Padnos Museum Internship Program at the Gerald R. Ford
Presidential Museum provides the necessary skills students need to attain a certain level of
marketability in the field. For its nearly twenty years in operation, the program has provided lasting
experiences for students from around the country.

UA Carson Scholarships (for UA students only!)
Beginning in the 2013-2014 academic year, the Carson Scholars Program will offer one-year, onetime-only, $5,000 graduate scholarships. The scholarships are designed to support and retain
University of Arizona PhD students whose research is related to the environment and renewable
energy and who are interested in communicating science to a broad audience. Faculty mentors will
provide guidance, training, and opportunities to meet with communication professionals to help the
scholars hone their skills in effectively explaining their (and others') research.

Open Society Fellowship

A program of the Open Society Foundations, the Open Society Fellowship supports individuals
from around the world pursuing innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open
society challenges. Areas of interest include human rights, government transparency, access to
information and to justice, and the promotion of civil society and social inclusion. Full-time fellows
based in the United States will receive a stipend of $80,000 or $100,000, plus a project budget.

Hewlett/IIE Dissertation Fellowship in Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic
Development
The Hewlett/IIE Dissertation Fellowship in Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic
Development provides both financial and research development support for dissertations on topics
that examine how population dynamics and family planning, and reproductive health influence
economic development. This can include economic growth, poverty reduction, and
equity. Dissertations that address population and development issues pertinent to the African
continent are especially encouraged. The fellowship is intended for doctoral students enrolled in
economics, economic demography, geography, and epidemiology, and address population and
development issues in their dissertation topics.

Onassis Foundation Research Grants and Educational Scholarships
The Foundation announces the nineteenth (19th) annual Programme of research grants and
educational scholarships starting on October 1st, 2013, which is addressed to non-Greeks, University
Professors of all levels (Ph.D. holders), postdoctoral researchers (Ph.D. holders), artists, post-
graduate students and Ph.D candidates. The programme covers the following fields: humanities,
social sciences (excluding law), economic sciences, and arts. The scholarships are offered for

The AIAA Foundation Graduate Award program provides awards to qualified students actively
participating in specific research endeavors as part of their graduate studies. These endeavors include

order to allow for the greatest possible flexibility in research, the AIAA Foundation has made

Argonne Laboratory-Graduate Research Appointments
Laboratory-Graduate Research (Lab-Grad) appointments are available for qualified U.S. university
graduate students who wish to carry out their thesis research at Argonne National Laboratory under
co-sponsorship of an Argonne staff member and a faculty member. The university sets the academic
standards and awards the degree. In practice, participation by the faculty member varies from full
partnership in the research to general supervision of the student's thesis work. The Argonne staff
sponsor undertakes to keep the faculty sponsor informed about the student's progress, and he/she
attends the thesis defense. Research may be conducted in the basic Physical and Life Sciences,
Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering as well as in a variety of applied research
programs relating to Energy, Conservation, Environmental Impact and Technology, Nanomaterials,
and Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems.

Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists
(CSTE) Applied Epidemiology Fellowship
The CDC/CSTE Fellowship is designed for recent master or doctoral level graduates in
epidemiology or a related field who are interested in the practice of public health at the state or local
level. While the program provides rigorous training for its participants, it is also designed with
flexibility in order to meet the particular interests of the Fellow. Fellows are carefully matched to
host agencies based on the career interests of the Fellow and available opportunities of the host
agency. Program participants will develop a comprehensive set of core skills through competencybased training.

Center for Disease Control Summer Graduate Environmental Health Internship
The Graduate Environmental Health program (GEH) is a paid ten week summer internship
available for graduate students with majors or interests deemed to be in support of environmental
health missions at NCEH/ATSDR. During the program interns will be assigned to projects that
utilize the skills they’ve acquired through graduate studies and personal experiences. Interns will also
be able to take advantage of lecture series and other opportunities offered at the CDC. Interns will
receive a $750 weekly stipend while participating in this program. The mission of the internship is to
offer selected students a broad overview of environmental health at the federal level and to foster an
interest in environmental health as a career. Applicants should have a passion for the environment
and an eagerness to learn about the environment’s link to human health.

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation - International Clinical Research Fellowship
The International Clinical Research Fellowship Program will provide support for medical students in
the United States to take a year off from school to conduct mentored clinical research in developing
countries.

an accredited U.S. medical or osteopathic school.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Harriett G. Jenkins Predoctoral
Fellowship Program
The Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program provides up to 20 fellowships yearly to
full-time underrepresented graduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM) disciplines. Students are selected for fellowships that include financial support and a 10week, hands on research experience at a NASA Center or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Fellowship
offers financial support for up to 3 years.

Property and Environment Research Center Internships
PERC'S fellowships for graduate students and law students offer the ideal opportunity for those
who are interested in researching issues related to natural resources and the environment.
Graduate fellows spend three months at PERC in Bozeman, Montana, researching and writing a
paper under the supervision of a PERC senior fellow. While at PERC, fellows are required to
present two workshops to outline, report on, and summarize their research findings. A paper of
publishable quality is the expected result. Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $1,800 in addition to
reimbursement for reasonable domestic round trip travel expenses to Montana.

Sea Grant Fellowship (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)
In 1999, NOAA National Sea Grant Office and NOAA Fisheries established a Graduate Fellowship
Program in two specialized areas: population dynamics and marine resource economics. Population
dynamics is the study of fish populations as affected by fishing mortality, growth, recruitment and
natural mortality. Ph.D. candidates interested in the population dynamics of living marine resources
and the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing their status can
receive up to three years of funding. Ph.D. students in marine resource economics, concentrating on
the conservation and management of living marine resources, can receive two years of funding.

Center
The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, a Ph.D.-granting institution of CUNY,

Theoretical Sciences (ITS), where they will interact with resident faculty and visiting scholars.

Mellon Postdoc Fellowship for “Crime and the City”
The Urban Studies Program of Brown University seeks applications for a two-year Mellon
Postdoctoral Fellowship beginning in September 2013 in the area of "Crime and the City." The

City" in the interdisciplinary Urban Studies Program and must be willing and able to participate in

National Academies Research Associateship Program
The mission of the NRC Research Associateship Programs (RAP) is to promote excellence in
scientific and technological research conducted by the U. S. government through the administration
of programs offering graduate, postdoctoral, and senior level research opportunities at sponsoring
federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. In these programs, prospective applicants select a
research project or projects from among the large group of opportunities listed on this website.
Prior to completing an application, prospective applicants should contact the proposed Research
Adviser to assure that funding will be available if their application is recommended by NRC panels.
Once mutual interest is established between a prospective applicant and a Research Adviser, an
application is submitted through the NRC WebRap system.

Prostate Cancer Foundation - 2013 Young Investigators Awards
Awards providing $75,000 per year for three years are available to support early career researchers
pursuing mentored prostate cancer research programs. Applicants should be within six years of
completing a professional degree or clinical training such as an MD, PhD, MD-PhD, MPH, or
equivalent. The applicant may hold the title of senior postdoctoral fellow, instructor, research
associate, assistant professor, or equivalent.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program
Applications for the Clinical Scholars Program, which provides university-based, postresidency
training to physicians in various disciplines, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Up to 20 scholars will each receive stipends of
$67,000 in the first year with an increase during the second year. The program aims to teach
physicians skills in improving health-services systems, emphasizing community-based research and
leadership training. Scholars are expected to complete graduate-level research projects in their
priority areas. The four participating institutions are the U. of California at Los Angeles, U. of
Michigan, U. of Pennsylvania, and Yale U. Additional information and application forms are

Wellcome Trust Fellowships in Public Health and Tropical Medicine
This scheme provides researchers from low- and middle-income countries - who are at an early stage
in the establishment of their research careers - with opportunities for research experience and highquality research … more »training in public health and tropical medicine. Research projects should
be aimed at understanding and controlling diseases (either human or animal) of relevance to local,
national or global health. This can include laboratory-based molecular analysis of field or clinical
samples, but projects focused solely on studies in vitro or using animal models will not normally be
considered under this scheme. This fellowship is part of a series of career awards aimed at building
sustainable capacity in areas of research that have the potential for increasing health benefits for
people and their livestock in low- and middle-income countries.
