Description
Madison Fellowships are offered to teachers and college students striving to become outstanding
teachers of the American Constitution. The scholarship provides support for graduate study that
focuses on the Constitution, its history and contemporary relevance to the practices and policies of
democratic government. Recipients have a unique opportunity to strengthen their research, writing,
and analytical skills, and, in the process, form professional ties that can significantly influence their
careers.
Eligibility
A candidate must:
 be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national
 be a teacher, or plan to become a teacher, of American history, American government, or social
studies at the secondary school level (grades 7-12)
 possess a bachelor's degree or plan to receive a bachelor's degree no later than August 31 of the
year of application and wait at least three years from the time that any previous graduate
degree was awarded before applying

applying for a Madison Fellowship.

Pre-Application Process
To be recommended as a CMU nominee and to advance in the competition, candidates must complete
and submit the pre-application form to the National Scholarship Program.
