Historic costumes play a key role in delivering an accurate portrayal of Alberta’s historical sites, and assists interpreters in creating life-long memories for our visitors. Role Reporting to the Curator of the Historic Sites and Museums Site Operations, the Costume Coordinator is responsible for the acquisition, production, research and management of historically appropriate and accurate interpretive costumes for a number of Provincial Historic Sites including, but not limited to, Father Lacombe Chapel, Historic Dunvegan, Rutherford House, Stephansson House, Victoria Settlement and the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. As the subject matter expert in historic costume construction, you will work independently to tailor, sew, and alter garments to comfortably fit the interpreters who will wear them. You will be responsible for setting standards for costume production activities and ensure that these standards are met. You will conduct research on historically appropriate costume styles, fabrics, patterns, and construction techniques to ensure the costume construction accurately represents the time periods interpreted at the historic sites. You will be responsible for implementing and maintaining the interpretive costume inventory and the associated database, managing the interpretive costume budget, and maintaining the condition of the costumes. You will also play an advisory role by informing interpretation staff on historic costume styles, historic deportment, costume storage and management procedures, and costume care and maintenance. As the successful candidate you will demonstrate a balance between sewing skills, and the ability to conduct historic research as you exercise your creative skills to produce appealing costumes. You must be able to work independently within a team environment and make decisions and problem solve within the scope of the position. Qualifications A post-secondary graduation (garment design, tailoring, pattern drafting and costume construction or related) along with two years of experience in the areas of historic costume production, pattern drafting and wardrobe management. Experience operating a range of sewing machines and related equipment at the professional level is required. Strong research skills and an in-depth knowledge of historic costumes specific to Alberta are essential to ensure the production of historically accurate costumes. Experience with Microsoft Office programs, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills are also required. Related experience in historic resource management, computer database systems, and museum studies are an asset. Skills in other heritage hand crafts such as hand sewing, embroidery, finger weaving, beadwork, lace tatting, leatherwork, millinery, etc., would also be an asset. Equivalencies will be considered.
