 Please do not expect learners to complete this all on one go.
 Allow them time to work on and complete the task throughout the week.
 Encourage your child to examine the mark scheme so that they can see what
they need to do to achieve the various national curriculum levels
 Encourage your child to start the work early.
 Encourage independence, but support their learning

skills.
You are expected to show that you have attempted the task in the booklet
Through doing these tasks,
all learners will be able to…

English for some of these.
 Evaluate the effectiveness of at least one language learning strategy.
 State a less effective language learning strategy.
most learners should be able to:
 Understand the French for all key verbs in the past tense and state the English
for all of these.
 Evaluate the effectiveness of two or more language learning strategies stating
the advantages and potential disadvantages of these.
some learners might be able to
 Understand the French and English for all of the key verbs in the past tense
 Trial three methods of language learning and evaluate the effectiveness of
these.
 Identify an alternative language learning strategy and evaluate the effectiveness
of this.
 State their preferred strategy for learning and apply this to learn new
vocabulary.
Work due in week beginning 25.11.13
TASK:
 For this task you will try 3 different language learning strategies to help you
learn 30 verbs in the past tense French.
 The verbs have been grouped into 10s.
 You should try a different strategy for each group of 10.
 You should then think about:
 What worked well?
 What problems did you have?
 What would you do differently if you used the strategy again?
 Learners are also encouraged to use the knowledge of themselves as learners
from Language learning so far to come up with a strategy of his or her own.
Learners should then think about:
- What worked well?
- What problems did you have?
- What would you do differently if you used the strategy again?
You will be required to perform a short presentation lasting up to 60 seconds during
which you should:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
present which strategies you have used
say how easy you found the strategies
talk about any problems you have and how you overcame these
explain what the most effective strategy was for you.
Explain what you have learnt about yourself as a learner as a result of doing this IST.
To support your presentation, you could use:
 Resources you have made
 Ppt
 Test scores….

List of learning strategies:
Select any 3 DIFFERENT strategies to try learning new words.
NOTE – simply looking at the words and trying to remember them will not help you learn the words
long term – trust me!
a. Mime.
Some people learn by doing, by moving around when they are learning. Come up with a mime to
help you learn words you are struggling with!
b. Mix and Match.
Cut up the phrases into individual words, mix them all up and then rebuild.
This is another way to learn by doing.
c. Draw pictures.
Rather than write the English translation, draw pictures for some of the words below. Using the
picture/French word list, use the look – cover – say/write – check method to test yourself - write the
French .
This is good for people who are visual learners, i.e. remember something by the way it looks.
d. Colour code for gender (masculine/feminine) or endings (-é/-i/-u/-it).
In French it is important to learn the gender of nouns or the ending of a verb, as well as their
meaning. Write a list of words and colour code them (use a coloured pen to write with, or use your
normal pen and colour over with a highlighter or colouring pencils). Use the look – cover – say/write
– check method to test yourself - write the French. This is another good method for visual learners.
In class we use BLUE for MASCULINE and RED for FEMININE nouns. You might, for example use
red for verbs which end in “é”, green for verbs which end in “u” and blue for verbs which end in “i”
etc.
e. Prepare puzzles.
Prepare puzzles for your friend to solve, or for yourself to do the next day. Examples: hangman,
anagrams, odd word out, word snake, etc.
This is very good if you struggle to remember spellings. Matching French/English games work well
too…!
f. Will you test me?
After going through the words, get someone at home to test you on the words to see which ones
you can remember and which you forget!
g. Labelled house
Post post-its around your room with the items of vocab on, so you see then wherever you go in the
room. You might decide to draw a picture on the post-it to help you further.
