Hart 439B Biological Sciences University of Wyoming jhart9@uwyo.edu cell: (802) 770-0107 office: (307) 766-4906 http://avianecologyatuwyo.blogspot.com EDUCATION Ph.D., Program in Ecology & Zoology and Physiology, anticipated May 2016 University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming; Advisor: Dr. Craig W. Benkman Bachelor of Science, Environmental Science, May 2001, Summa cum laude University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont; Advisor: Dr. Alan McIntosh RESEARCH INTERESTS My primary research interest is to use an interdisciplinary approach to address complex conservation issues surrounding rare, specialized, and vulnerable species. Much of my previous work has focused on bird conservation in New England, the Caribbean, and New Zealand. For my dissertation research, I am trying to gain a mechanistic understanding of decline in South Hills Crossbill due to a climate-induced reduction of their sole food resource, seeds of lodgepole pine. The results of this research will inform forest management in the South Hills, Idaho. EXPERIENCE CONSERVATION BIOLOGIST (Co-founder) Oct 2007-Aug 2009 Vermont Center for Ecostudies, Norwich, Vermont Coordinated a regional high-elevation bird monitoring project and coordinated the International Bicknell’s Thrush Conservation Group. BIOLOGICAL TECHNICIAN Apr 2006-Sept 2007 Vermont Institute of Natural Science, Quechee, Vermont Trained and coordinated ~150 volunteers in five states to monitor high-elevation songbirds, and provided field and technical support for conservation biology projects. NEW JERSEY WILDLIFE MIGRATION TECHNICIAN Duke Farms Foundation, Hillsborough, New Jersey Conducted an established hawk watch and coordinated volunteers. Aug 2005-Oct 2005 BREEDING BIRD ATLAS FIELD ASSISTANT Jun 2005-Jul 2005 Vermont Institute of Natural Science, Northeast Kingdom, Vermont Observed and interpreted breeding behavior of eastern birds for statewide atlas project. IVORY-BILLED WOODPECKER RESEARCHER Dec 2004-May 2005 Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Cache River National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas Participated in systematic surveys for the Ivory-billed Woodpecker and supervised data entry. ISLAND SUPERVISOR May 2004-Aug 2004 National Audubon Society Seabird Restoration Program, Outer Green Island, Maine Managed a Common and Roseate Tern colony, supervised island interns, monitored growth rates and fledging success, and studied parent-chick feeding interactions. 1 Julie A. Hart KOKAKO FIELD ASSISTANT Feb 2004-May 2004 Kokako Recovery Research, Rotoehu Forest, New Zealand Assisted with census of endangered Kokako, re-sighted banded birds and determined territory boundaries, conducted playback experiments to test pair bond strength. FOREST ECOSYSTEM RESEARCH INTERN Jun 1999-Aug 1998 School of Natural Resources, University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont Conducted an independent research project on the influence of acid rain on the leachate from lysimeters with respect to soil type, vegetation, and pH as part of continuing research on legacy effects of trees on soils, cation budgets, and nitrogen accumulation in pines.
