The POWER of Wind
Wind power is the scalable renewable
energy solution for clean energy goals and
standards
Wind energy capacity can lower power
prices in wholesale markets
Long-term contracts for wind power lock in
competitive power prices for ratepayers,
hedging the market and supply risks of
fossil fuel sources
Manufacturing, construction and operations
of wind projects utilize local contractors and
businesses, and provide stable income and
tax revenues for host communities
Wind power produces electricity without
jeopardizing natural resources, climate or
public health

CLEAN POWER: MADE IN VERMONT, FOR VERMONT
Currently operational in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom atop
Granby Mountain and Libby Hill, Sheffield Wind is First Wind’s
first wind farm in Vermont. The project has a maximum output
of 40 megawatts (MW) which produces roughly 115,000
megawatt-hours annually for Vermont utility companies. In
addition to providing enough clean, safe power for all of the
homes in Caledonia Country, Sheffield Wind offers a number
of ongoing benefits for local communities.
SHEFFIELD WIND PROFILE:
Operational since October 2011
Comprised of 16 Clipper Liberty 2.5 megawatt (MW)
turbines
Delivers clean, reliable power to Vermont utilities such as
Vermont Electric (VELCO), Washington Electric Co-op
(WEC), and the Burlington Electric Department, serving
dozens of nearby towns
Provides full-time direct employment and ongoing
contracting opportunities for Vermont workers and
companies
CLEAN ENERGY AND SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT FOR VERMONT
The Sheffield Wind project is an example of how economic
growth and achieving environmental goals can go hand in hand.
Vermont’s rigorous state permitting process coupled with First
Wind’s commitment to environmental stewardship brings the
benefits of wind energy to the Northeast Kingdom while protecting
the area’s environment for future generations.
ECONOMIC BENEFITS
Development and construction required about 185,000 direct
and on-site labor hours and utilized 50 Vermont businesses
for site work, supplies and equipment, environmental
services, fuel and maintenance, and lodging
Payments and services for land, property and state taxes, and
various maintenance contracts, cumulatively worth $1 million
per year, will stay in Vermont for the life of the project
Energy from the facility is contracted and sold at competitive
fixed rates, helping stabilize electricity rates otherwise subject
to volatility in the price of fossil fuels
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Unlike conventional power sources, wind power produces
electricity without harmful emissions or watershed pollution
Power produced by Sheffield Wind avoids more than 33,000
tons of CO2e per year
218,076 barrels of oil would be required to produce power at a
level equivalent to that of the Sheffield Wind facility
Provisions of the Sheffield Wind land lease include a nodevelopment easement, land conservation, and special
protections for bear habitat
