A Resolution in Support of the “Confronting Racism and White Privilege” Film
Screening and Facilitated Discussion
Be it enacted by the Student Senate of George Mason UniversityWhereas, George Mason University is one of the most diverse schools in the country with
nearly 50% of graduate and undergraduate students identifying as a ‘a minority,’ ‘a
person of color,’ or ‘a non-white’ student according to university records, and
Whereas, part of the mission of George Mason is to “encourage freedom of thought,
speech, and inquiry in a tolerant, respectful academic setting that values diversity,” and
Whereas, the Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education Office, Mason
DREAMers, the Progressive Student Alliance, and the Environmental Action Group have
expressed interest in organizing a film screening and facilitated discussion on white
privilege and identity politics, and
Whereas, the goals of the event is to address the interconnected issues of racial
oppression and white privilege, provide a greater understanding of how identity politics
play out in our everyday lives, and explore people’s experiences of institutional, cultural,
and interpersonal racism that takes place on campus, and
Whereas, Dr. Walter from the Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education Office
has expressed interest in leading a discussion after the film screening with other
experienced facilitators to ensure a tolerant, respectful discussion that values diversity,
and
Whereas, the tentative date and time for this event is Tuesday April 10th from 5pm to
7pm.
Therefore be it resolved, that the Student Senate of George Mason University supports
the “Confronting Racism and White Privilege” film screening and facilitated discussion
and will co-sponsor the event by encouraging members within student government to
attend.
