1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division

The Manager, Student Program Development (Joe Crowley Student Union), is a key member of the
program management team for the Joe Crowley Student Union (JCSU) at the University of Nevada,
Reno (UNR). The Manager is responsible for successful development, coordination, implementation,
and assessment of programs. Incumbent is charged with initiating and overseeing innovative
communication methods for services and programs including print and electronic media and website
design. This position oversees, in coordination with the Associate Director of JCSU, all student union
programming and marketing efforts, and budgets. The individual develops public relations initiatives
in coordination with University Marketing and Communications. The position reports to the Associate
Director of Programs.

45% - Student Program Development
 Prioritize, develop, and execute strategic plan for programming
 Develop and implement successful late night/weekend programming
 Build relationships to explore and realize program collaborations with other University
departments and student organizations including initial contact, attending meetings, presenting
ideas, and program follow-up with student leaders, academic faculty, and administrative
faculty
 Execute student union programs, including marketing and event production
 Prepare and monitor expenditure budgets for program activities.
 Administer assessment efforts to enhance services and effectively allocate resources
 Track in detail various program components including but not limited to facilities, equipment,
and personnel
 Prepare program reports and presentations for Faculty Senate, Staff Employees Council, and
the Division of Student Services as requested
 Oversee programming graduate assistant/interns and student employees in coordination with
Associate Director of Operations and Associate Director of Programs
 Plan programs and events in coordination with with the Associate Director of Programs,
Student Union Coordinator, and Operations Manager to effectively schedule,
 Ensure smooth event management, program, and departmental operation in absence of
Student Union Coordinator, Operations Manager, and/or Technology Services Coordinator
 Represent the Associate Director of Programs in his/her absence
35% - Program Advocacy and Promotion
 Initiate and oversee coordination of innovative communication methods of student union
program offerings
 Research best practices and state of the art methods to develop and implement strategic plan
for marketing, program communication, and services
 Design and/or delivery of presentations and materials describing and supporting the
programming activities of the student union and university
 Coordinate with Technologies Services Coordinator, Marketing and Communications
department, and Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN), and others to
create and execute collaborative marketing efforts for the student union, student services, and
University as a whole

Oversee marketing staff of graphic designers, graduate assistant/interns and student
employees in coordination with Associate Director of Operations and Associate Director of
Programs
Ensure program components continuous operation and success in absence of staff
Work with Associate Director of Operations in hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, and
evaluation of student employee program
Serve as an active member of Student Services Division, University of Nevada, Reno (UNR),
and community committees that supports and advances University goals
20% - Event Coordination
 Interpret the needs and requests of performers and collaborating event planners to provide the
proper facility, equipment and services
 Monitor contractual obligations and technical riders of performers
 Investigate and recommend facility improvements and equipment purchases for events and
programs within the student union
 Troubleshoot to develop innovative and immediate solutions to event challenges
 Manage events from move-in through move-out , working with performers and University staff
to ensure compliance with University policy and contractual obligations
 Oversee all aspects of event coordination from initial contact, execution, and follow-up
 Communicate with UNR Police, JCSU Custodial Staff, JCSU Operations Manager, ASUN
Security, Facilities Services, Teaching and Learning Technologies, Food Services, and other
event entities regarding event schedules and client needs; provide timely and accurate
information to the relevant parties in regard to JCSU facility scheduling and events
 Ensure effective program, scheduling, and event management in cooperation with and in
absence of Student Union Coordinator
 Continually assess and improve services to meet client needs
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Manager’s actions of the successful shift of campus culture put forth in the University goals
significantly impact the development of a highly active co-curricular programming effort. The new
facility and the programs within are key to the movement of the center of campus life and the
transformation to a 24/7 campus. The Manager has moderate supervision with goals and priorities
outlined for completion. It is the responsibility of the individual to implement activities, allocate
resources, oversee staff, and garner support to accomplish departmental and university goals.
Impact:
In many cases, errors in judgment will immediately have a detrimental impact on the operation and
reputation of the JCSU and the University as a whole as event logistics and program failures will be
visible and apparent. In other cases, inadequate performance may reveal itself over time with the
limited growth and inefficient utilization of resources. Effects of his/her job performance will be felt
directly by other departments and community members. This position provides the public face of the
student union, impacting the perceptions of patrons, donors, and campus/state leaders. Negative
press could result in the loss of financial and other support from influential individuals.
