Disposal of Harmful Solutions and Mixtures
Grade 7 Science: Pure Substances and Mixtures Project (Modified)
As we learned in our science unit, pollutants often mix with water, air or land to form solutions
and mechanical mixtures that are harmful to the environment. Therefore, we need to be very
careful how we dispose of waste that may be harmful to the environment. Your assignment is
to study ways that we dispose of harmful waste. You may choose ONE of the following:
1. Research how the citizens of Hamilton can dispose of hazardous waste. You will make
up a poster that contains the following information:
a. What is hazardous waste?
b. Why do we need to treat it different from other waste (why can’t we put it out
with the regular garbage)?
c. Clearly explain the proper procedures for disposing of hazardous waste in
Hamilton.
Make sure your poster is informative – you are teaching others what hazardous waste is
and why it is so important we dispose of it correctly!

2. Research how sewage is treated before it is released back into the water system. You
will create a poster that contains the following information:
a. What is sewage?
b. Why do we need to “treat” sewage?
c. Draw a diagram with explanations of the different stages of the sewage
treatment process.
d. List some things that people should never pour down the drain.
Make sure your poster is informative – you are teaching others what happens to the
water they flush down the drains! Sewage treatment is a very important process in
keeping our environment healthy!
