GOLDEN VALLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL – Project Overview Terms 1 and 2 2015/2016 Title: Get off my land!! Year group: 5 Summary of module: This is a history and geography based unit. The children will learn about Life in Roman Times, look at the settlements of Roman Britain and find out about key historical people of that time. They will look in further detail about how the weapons use forces to work and carry out a science investigation into a range of these. Science: Forces and Motion: Attraction and repulsion between magnets and magnetic materials Gravity Friction and air resistance How forces are measured History: Key historical Roman people. Life in Roman Times Anglo-Saxon period. RE Journeys Harvest Christmas Duration of module: 14 weeks Stimulus for learning module/First-hand experiences/WOW activities: WOW day to immerse the children in the project: Children and staff to dress up in ‘Roman’ costumes and complete a carousel of activities giving an insight into Roman Life. Trip to Chedworth Roman Villa. Art: Learn about the artist Kandinsky as well as creating a piece of art in his style. DT: Geography: Look at how Britain became a Roman settlement. Look on a map of Europe to identify where the Romans settled. Compare Roman Britain to today Music: Charanga Music scheme: Christmas Carols ICT: E-safety Elim ICT scheme PE: T1 Gymnastics T2 Dance T1 Outdoor – Rugby T2 Outdoor – Future Stars Legacy Literacy (including cross-curricular): Stories from other cultures – The Cobbler and the Dragon Persuasive text – Volcanoes Poetry – Figurative language Maths (including cross-curricular): Standalone subjects: Number French Place Value PHSE Multiplication Tables (12x12) Values Measures Data handling Presentation of theme: Critical skills challenges: WOW day challenge Kandinsky Challenge Art: to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas ; to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials; about great artists, architects and designers in history. Geography: types of settlement and land use, economic activity including trade links, and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water; use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in the local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs, and digital technologies. History: a study over time tracing how several aspects of national history are reflected in the locality (this can go beyond 1066 Science: the forces of attraction and repulsion between magnets, and about the forces of attraction between magnets and magnetic materials that objects are pulled downwards because of the gravitational attraction between them and the Earth about friction, including air resistance, as a force that slows moving objects and may prevent objects from starting to move that when objects [for example, a spring, a table] are pushed or pulled, an opposing pull or push can be felt how to measure forces and identify the direction in which they act.
