Step 1
Length:
Students remain on Step 1 for 10 school days with satisfactory behavioral
performance. At the end of ten days, students move to Step 2 without a petition
meeting.
Criteria:
Step 1 is an orientation step. Movement to Step 2 is automatic with a daily
average of at least 80% for 10 school days. Step 1 is a time for learning the
expectations and requirements of the school and the Steps to Success Program. It
also provides teachers an opportunity to record baseline behavior data for each
student. The goal for students is to increase performance on a daily basis,
preparing them to meet the more rigorous expectations in Steps 2, 3, and 4.

MIDDLE SCHOOL (7-8)
 Eligible for Friday Clubs

Step 2
Length:
Students remain on Step 2 for a minimum of 20 school days before they move to
Step 3.
Criteria:
Students on Step 2 are expected to achieve the following goals and criteria.
Movement to Step 3 occurs after these expectations have been met.
 Daily average of at least 80% on point sheet for 20 school days
 Consistent goal area averages of at least 80%
 Consistently return signed point sheets
 Complete at least 80% of all homework and class work assignments
 Consistently participate in counseling and social skills sessions
 Identify and begin to use anger management strategies with staff prompts
 Demonstrate age-appropriate interactions with staff and peers

Length:

for Step 4.
Criteria:
Students on Step 3 are expected to achieve the following goals and criteria.
Movement to Step 4 occurs after these expectations have been met.
 Daily average of at least 85% on point sheet for 30 school days
 Consistent goal area averages of at least 85%
 Consistently return signed point sheets
 Complete at least 85% of all homework and class work assignments
 Consistently participate in counseling and social skills sessions
 Identify and begin to use anger management strategies more frequently (8085%) and with fewer staff prompts
 Attend school on a regular basis

Length:
Students remain on Step 4 for a minimum of 30 school days before they can petition for
a transition meeting.
Criteria:
Students on Step 3 are expected to achieve the following goals and criteria. Movement
to the transition phase can be considered only after these expectations have been met.
 Daily average of at least 90% on point sheet for 30 school days
 Consistent goal area averages of at least 90%
 Consistently return signed point sheets
 Complete at least 90% of all homework and class work assignments
 Consistently participate in counseling and social skills sessions
 Initiate anger management strategies independently and consistently
 Attend school on a regular basis
 Consistent effort and participation in core content classes
 No suspensions, truancies, behavior referrals, or police interventions

Transition Phase
Criteria:
When a student has met the requirements and expectations of Step 4 and
consistently demonstrates respectful and responsible behavior, an IEP meeting
should be called to discuss a less restrictive placement.
