FREE RESPONSE FOR CHAPTER 9 INT GROUPS A) Describe the following technique and explain why an interest group would use this technique. 1) litigation 2) mass mobilization/grassroots lobbying 3) campaign contributions B) Select two of the following interest groups and identify the primary technique it would use from the above list and explain why it would choose that technique over the others. NRA (National Rifle Association) Sierra Club AMA (American Medical Association) NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) ANSWER: A) 1. Litigation is the use of the court system to further your cause. Groups that use this technique do so because they feel their rights have been violated 2. mass mobilization is when a group gets a lot of its followers together in an effort to raise awareness through media coverage. This technique is utilized because it is inexpensive. 3. campaign conributions is the act of giving money to a candidate to help them win in an election. This is used to gain access to this candidate when he/she wins. B) NRA- would use campaign contributions due its large membership and access to funds. Sierra Club- would use mass mobilization and try to sway public opinion by garnering media coverage. AMA- would use campaign contributions. Same reason as NRA NAACP- would use litigation to stop civil rights violations, example would be Brown v Board of Education to stop segregation.
